Cecil Squires Obituary


GREENSBORO, N.C. - Cecil James Squires, 90, of 3114 Farmington Drive, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 at Moses Cone Hospital.

Born May 26, 1914 in Ossippee, N.C., he was the son of the late Walter James Squires and Donna Stovall Squires.

He graduated from N.C. State University in 1938 with a degree in textile engineering, was a member of the Gate City Lions Club, a member of the West Market United Methodist Church choir, and a member of the Fieldcrest Quartet of Eden. They performed during the 1950's around the southeast and on WFMY-TV in Greensboro. He retired in 1979 as an executive manager from Cone Mills White Oak plant. After retiring, he spent the next decade working with International Executives Service Corp, traveling to Central and South America, Europe, and Asia to assist third world countries in new methods of textile manufacturing. He was a man who truly walked with God.

He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 until 1945, having served in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. He was a commander of the 42nd Rainbow Division Headquarters Company in Europe.

He was married to Sylvia Cochran Squires.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Ken Squires of Greensboro, Gerald Squires of Mobile, Ala., Janice Lloyd of Greensboro and James Squires of Greensboro; one sister, Ruth Minter of Eden; two brothers, Ervin Squires of Kingwood, Texas and Daniel Squires of Eden; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Squires and Merrit Squires.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2004 at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro with the Rev. Dr. David Melton officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Reidsville with military graveside rites.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 27 at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service, 1118 North Elm Street, Greensboro.

Memorials may be made to West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.

Forbis & Dick Funeral Service in Greensboro is in charge of arrangements.
