Marshall Rumney
DANVILLE - George Robert Marshall Rumney, 95, of 535 Brightwell Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at Danville Regional Medical Center, where he had been a patient for 10 days.
Born Dec. 23, 1910, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late George Harrison Rumney and the late Edith Wheeler Rumney.
He had lived in Virginia since 1934, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, his B.D. degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and was ordained June 2, 1940.
He pastored at Heritage and Glee Landing Baptist churches in Middlesex County, Franklin Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Keen Street Baptist Church in Danville, First Baptist Church in Chase City and Blanch Baptist Church in Blanch, N.C.
He was very active in civic and fraternities in Danville and was a member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
He was a member and chaplain of American Legion Post 325 of Danville, Department chaplain of American Legion Department of Virginia from 1976 to 1981, National Chaplain from 1981 to 1982 recipient of the Sertoma Clubs "Service to Mankind" award in 1983, a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge 122, Royal Arch Chapter 10 in Lynchburg, Danville Consistary Scottish Rites and the Kazim Temple Shrine, Roanoke.
He was commissioned as 1st Lt. May 14, 1942, in the U.S. Air Force as Chaplain. He was promoted to Colonel on June 29, 1967, serving during World War II and the Korean War, retiring Dec. 23, 1970.
He married the late Lucille May Johnson Rumney on Nov. 18, 1938. She died Dec. 8, 1982.
He is survived by one son, Eugene J. Rumney of Lynchburg; one daughter, Janet Elaine R. Koester of Timonium, Md.; one brother, Howard Kenneth Rumney of Bessimer City, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Highland Burial Park with military honors presented by American Legion Post 325.
Visitation was held 6 to 7:30 Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
