Murray "Buddy" Rippe

Murray "Buddy" Rippe, of 242 Parkview Place, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Danville, a son of Benjamin Arthur Rippe and Annie Allen Rippe. He was a graduate of George Washington High School and Washington and Lee University. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army with the rank of Second Lieutenant.

On Aug. 15, 1943, he married the former Esther Costin. He was owner and operator of Rippe's Feminine Apparel until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of Temple Beth Shalom.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Louis Edwin Rippe, and a sister, Olga Rippe Gladstone.

In addition to his wife, Esther, he is survived by two sons, Arthur Benjamin Rippe and his wife, Clara, of Danville, and Allen Keith Rippe and his wife, Mona, of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Carol Anne Rippe Gordon, and her husband, Julius, of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Samuel Benjamin Rippe, Max Edo Rippe and Sonia Rippe; and a sister, Miriam Jacobi, of Miami Beach, Fla.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2010, at Green Hill Cemetery with Rabbi Morton Green officiating. The family will be at the residence, 242 Parkview Place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Dear Rippe Family, Mike and I were very saddened to learn of Mr. Rippe's passing. My grandmother, Esther Hoke, was a long time employee of Rippe's. I was distressed to learn today of Buddy's passing. My wife, Bonnie, and I had hoped to see you when we visited the temple on April 30. In addition to being a fellow Main Street merchant of unquestionable integrity, Buddy was of that rare breed of sons of our Commonwealth, who had no need to ever appear to be anything other than himself.
