Daniel Anderson Obituary

Daniel J. Anderson
Edwardsville - Daniel J. Anderson, a revered artist and educator from Edwardsville, died Feb. 5, 2023, at his home at age 77 after a yearlong battle with cancer.
Dan was born Nov. 2, 1945, in St. Paul, MN. He grew up in Hudson, WI, the younger son of the late Lawrence "Lars" Anderson and Harriet Anderson. His older brother David Anderson also preceded him in death, in 2004, but not before helping Dan and his wife of 50 years, Caroline, build an "art house" and studio complex virtually adjacent to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where Dan led one of the nation's most highly regarded ceramic arts programs for 32 years.
Exuberant, inquisitive and unfailingly inclusive, Dan reveled in making lasting, meaningful connections. His passion for collecting great art and good friends filled his house and his heart for the 53 years he called Edwardsville home. In that time, dozens of luminaries in the American studio pottery movement spent hours visiting Dan's classes at SIUE and making clay pieces in his anagama-style wood-fired kiln.
Besides his wife, he is survived by daughters Sarah Sturgill and Molly Anderson, sons-in-law Jason Sturgill and Curt Kentner, grandson Archer Sturgill, and granddaughters Penelope and Loretta Kentner, all of Portland, Oregon.
Dan and Caroline traveled often to Portland over the past two decades to stay close to family and reconnect with artists and former colleagues on the West Coast. He embraced the Pacific Northwest with the same enthusiasm he applied to every pursuit, be it playing softball in Edwardsville recreation leagues, vacationing with family and friends in Holden Beach, N.C., mentoring students and fledgling art collectors, or hosting legendary Thanksgiving celebrations at the Wagner Complex in Edwardsville's historic Leclaire neighborhood, where SIUE's art department was situated until 1993.
Dan retired from SIUE in 2002, continuing as professor emeritus and maintaining a studio art practice for the past 20 years. His own work, informed by travels throughout Europe, Africa and Asia, reflected a reverence for his Midwest roots and the architectural forms of rural America. Dan never saw a water tower or granary he couldn't transform into a finely detailed piece of art that celebrated ingenuity and hard work. His clever use of decals paid further homage to a time when advertising was equal parts public art and social media. His work is held in museums across the country, including the St. Louis Art Museum, and in public and private collections worldwide.
Dan graduated from Hudson High School in 1963 and pursued his love of learning at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (BS in art education, 1968) and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI (MFA in ceramics, 1970). He was instrumental in the creation of the Edwardsville Arts Center and his family encourages memorial gifts be directed to the Edwardsville Community Foundation-Edwardsville Arts Center Fund (ECF-EAC Fund, PO Box 102, Edwardsville, IL 62025). Friends and family will organize a celebration of Dan's life this summer. Meantime, take heed of Dan's favorite saying ascribed to the late Yogi Berra: "You can observe a lot just by watching."

I think of Dan nearly every day. Sometimes it's something someone says or does or the "way" they say or do it. Every time I hear a laugh (which happens every day) I think of the laughter that Dan shared with me, oh those many years ago. When I think of the "near" trouble we (almost) got into ..haha...and the just plain living our youthful years together.....the best....the joy that I carry for the rest of my life is due in no small measure to our friendship.........and because of that I think of you, Caroline, and your family.
Stay well.... Ekips Noslo

Dan Anderson was larger than life.
While I am not fond of cliche, this one was invented for the likes Dan. Without any hesitation, he was the finest teacher I experienced, especially at a time when I needed it most. Distilled, likely the most important lesson I learned from Dan was how to be equipped to continue learning as a life long pursuit, and forever be curious about this crazy and fascinating world.

Philosophically, Dan will never die for me. I hear his voice, feel the texture of his work, and sense his presence daily while working in my studio. Time and geographical distance had no negative effect on our unique friendship and mutual respect.

Everyone who knew Dan, could not help but experience his generosity, love of life, enthusiasm for the art world (I cannot leave out the Cardinals), and especially Dan´s unfailing love for his family. It seemed that Dan was reborn by the birth of his grandchildren.

The world that knew and loved Dan Anderson is aching with grief. I thought I understood grief...until now.

Dan was like an older brother to me as we were growing up. My parents were Dan's God parents and we were in the same Confirmation Class at Zion Lutheran Church. Great memories of Luther League outings to the Anderson's cabin on Trout Brook. Condolences to Dan's family. Try to learn to live with the love he left behind. Gone from our lives but not our hearts. May he rest in peace. Sally Johnson Schilling

"Exuberant, inquisitive and unfailingly inclusive, Dan reveled in making lasting, meaningful connections." WOW! ... aptly described. Words from his family, no doubt. I've known Dan my whole life and although we shared many "fun" and "interesting" experiences, which are too many and lengthy to share here I guarantee they will be shared by us all, his family and friends. Dan's friendship had a profound affect on my life. I admired him from afar and would add only one word to the family's: "intent". Dan lived his life with great intention. He knew what he wanted to do with his life in his art, his profession with family and friends, and he did it, with all the quirkiness and gusto that he shared with us all. I will love that man forever and will smile. My condolences to his family. Sincerely Ekips

My sincere sympathy to you and your family, Caroline. May you be comforted by the love of so many friends and family members who loved you and Dan; so many who admired the artful beauty you both created. I'll always lovingly remember Dan as Uncle Louie, the sweet artist who made a huge pot for me covered with macrame...I still have it. May God bless you and hold you through this time of grieving.

Dan and I worked together for 30 years @ SIUE. We shared many undergrad and graduate students. He launched a bunch of students careers after SIUE. He contributed to development of Edwardsville Arts Center, Sacred Grounds displays and others. He was highly regarded nationally for ceramics. Yes, I will miss him. Condolences to Caroline and family.

Always enjoyed when he frequented Neruda with family for dinner or NYE's festivities. My mother Jean's two favorite contemporaries were Dan and Joe Weber, collaborating on campus or mingling at the yearly Art Auction. Will think of him while scooping guacamole or chili con queso from one of his water tower ceramic sculptures.
