Fr. Corredato Obituary

Rev. Fr. John L. Corredato, CSV, age 66, a priest of the Viatorian Community, died on April 7, 2008.

He was born in Springfield, the son of Anthony and Bruna Gaio Corredato who preceded him in death.

He is survived by one brother James A., and wife JoAnn, Corredato, and one sister, Mary E., and husband Donald, Buckman. Fr. Corredato was the loving nephew of Atilio and Hilda Corredato and Della Gaio, and the beloved uncle and great uncle to niece: Jennifer Lynn, and husband Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Sowers and their children Alex and Bradley; niece: Julie Christine, and husband Stephen, Hughes and their children Liam and Sean; nephew: John Joseph, and wife Ann, Corredato and their children MaryKate, Michael, Sophia and Claire; and step-niece: Kim Buckman Mitchell and her children Travis and Jason. He is also survived by numerous first and second cousins.

Fr. Corredato professed his first vows with the Clerics of St. Viator in 1960, and was ordained a priest in 1968. He was a 1959 graduate of Cathedral Boys High School in Springfield. He held a bachelor's degree in history from Loyola University, Chicago, and a master's degree in religious education from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. After ordination, he was assigned as associate pastor to St. Viator Parish and Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas, Nev. From 1971 until 1981 he served as associate pastor at St. Patrick Parish in Kankakee. He was then assigned to St. Viator Parish, Las Vegas as associate pastor for one year. He was appointed as pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, where he served from 1982 until 1990. He returned once again to Las Vegas to serve as pastor of St. Viator Parish for five years. He then returned to his native Illinois to become pastor at St. Boniface Parish in Edwardsville, where he served from 1995 until July 2007. In September 2007, Fr. Corredato was assigned to Las Vegas as parochial vicar for Guardian Angel Cathedral.

Visitation will be at St. Joseph Church in Springfield, on Sunday, April 13, from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a wake service at 7:15 p.m.

There will be visitation before Mass beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on April 14, at St. Joseph Church.

Interment will be in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield.

Fr John will be missed by a great number of people. Fr. John was a very special priest. He worked very hard to make St. Boniface parish the beautiful parish it is today. He was there for me when I needed a very caring and helpful priest. With sincere sympathy.
