Randol Mercer Obituary

Rev. Randol L. Mercer 86 of Girard, IL passed away Monday March 17, 2014 at his home after a brief bout with cancer.
Randol was born December 21, 1927 in Granite City, IL, the son of Carl and Vineta Mercer.
Randol married Shirley Weiderman August 20, 1949 in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Pastor Mercer preached his first sermon in 1946 as a teenager, and after one year in the U.S. Army attended Bible College, graduating from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri in 1953. He served pastorates in Kenosha, WI, Edwardsville, IL, Brighton, IL and twenty years at Prairie Temple Assembly of God in Virden, IL. He was active in youth and Sunday school ministries, as well as the Maryville Children's Home and nursing home building and administration for the Illinois District of The Assemblies of God. Pastor Mercer served in various promotional and development capacities in the building of Lake Williamson Christian Center in Carlinville, IL, the headquarters for the Illinois Assemblies of God. The Mercers produced and hosted several years of live local radio broadcasts while in Virden, IL.
Randol is survived by his wife Shirley Mercer of Girard, IL, a daughter Dawn DeLee (Jim) Cherry of Girard, IL, sisters, Vineta (Bill) Smallie and Faye Mercer both of Granite City, IL, a brother, Glen (Etta Rae) Mercer of Edwardsville, IL, grandsons, Tony (Erin) Mercer of Palos Heights, IL, Jeff (Lyndsey) Cherry of Springfield, MO and Andy (Melissa) Cherry of Edwardsville, IL, a granddaughter Jill Cherry of Girard, IL, three great-grandchildren, Owen Jeffrey and Winnie Harper Cherry and Martin John Mercer and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding in death were Randol's parents, a son Martin Randol Mercer and four sisters and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday March 20, 2014 at Prairie Temple Assembly God Virden, IL and one hour prior to funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Friday March 21, 2014 at the church. Rev. Terry Turner and Rev. Dick Whitworth officiating.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday March 21, 2014 at Sunset Hills Memorial Estates, Edwardsville, IL.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Prairie Temple Assembly visit calvert-ferryfuneralhomes.com to leave a comment for the family.
