PLAINS TWP. — Stephen Ference, 87, formerly of Plains and Miners Mills, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at Little Flower Manor, where he had been a resident for the last nine years.

Born in Plains Township, Stephen was a son of the late Fred and Anna (Wansaw) Ference. He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School and lived in Plains for the greater part of his life. Prior to retirement, Stephen was the plant manager of Alta Products, previously located in Hanover Township.

His wife, the former Dolores Eleanor Kelly, a brother and eight sisters, preceded him in death.

Stephen is survived by a daughter, Maria (Ference) Williamson and her husband, Donald, of Jenkins Township; sons, Robert and his wife, Sandra, of Shavertown, and Stephen and his wife, Debra, of Wilkes-Barre Township; grandchildren, Jerry McHale, Melissa McHale, Nicole Ference, Stephen Ference, Lauryn Ference and Jeffrey Ference; step-grandchildren, Nicole Williamson, Craig Williamson and Paul Williamson.

The family of Mr. Ference thanks the nursing staff, aides, sisters, pastoral care, social services and specialists of Little Flower Manor for their services, compassion and care for Stephen over the last nine years; and Dr. Roy Gernhardt for his care of Stephen and the kindnesses extended to the family throughout his time at Little Flower Manor.

Steve was the plant manager of Alta when I was a young man. He always encouraged me to get an education. He was a boss but more than that a mentor. I'm sure he helped a lot of people along the way and he certainly did right by me. He was a gentleman who could be hard nosed and a leader who could be compassionate. Thank you Steve for everything you did to help me shape my life. Hopefully, I'll see you again some day. Thank you boss.

Dear Bob, Steve and Maria,
Uncle Steve was a great man, father and friend. We have wonderful memories of our childhood when all the families would get together at your Grandmothers house. We are sure he is now with Aunt Dolores and all the rest of his family and friends. May he rest in peace! Joseph, Pattie and Ann Janus
