Carl Cahill Obituary

Carl James Cahill, Jr.

Sonora - Carl James Cahill, Jr., "Jimmy Cahill," passed away peacefully June 4, 2021 at the age of 78 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 29, 1943 to Wanda Cahill and Carl J. Cahill, Sr. Jimmy grew up in Sonora, Texas, graduating as salutatorian from

Sonora High School in 1961. He was involved in Boy Scouts and worked in the oil field from an early age and was an integral part of the Sonora Bronco football team. He went on to attend Texas Tech University and graduated in 1966 with a degree in business administration. While at Tech he met and married Ruthie Shafer on January 28, 1967 and they were married for 43 years until her death in 2010. On July 12, 2010 Jimmy married Linda Love and they enjoyed the next eleven years together. Jimmy worked in and eventually ran Carl J. Cahill, Inc., an oilfield construction company started by his father. Jimmy spent his life working in and expanding the daily management of CJC, Inc., where he worked up until his last days. He worked on countless ranches across Texas and developed lifelong friendships with ranchers and oilmen alike. Jimmy will be forever grateful for the hardworking and loyal CJC employees whom he considered his family. He enjoyed ranching, raising cattle, angora goats, and wildlife. He ran hunting concessions and was always involved in civic activities and promotion of the community of Sonora and the surrounding area. He founded Sonora Mohair & Company owned by area mohair producers that processed mohair from the shorn hair to the finished product. He was able to develop mohair throws and blankets, fabrics, and socks, and even had a mohair clothing line in the New York marketplace for a few seasons. His home-based outlet for his mohair products, Ol' Sonora Trading Company, was a successful retail store in Sonora for a number of years. Jimmy was an entrepreneur and a visionary, always finding ways to enrich the lives of others. He helped organize the Covered Wagon Dinner Theater, a summer weekend venue at the Caverns of Sonora. He created and distributed I-10 Magazine promoting businesses along I-10 throughout Texas. He was integral in securing the property and served on the board of the Eaton Hill Nature Center and Preserve. Jimmy was an avid fan and supporter of the Sonora Broncos and attended every football game he could make, whether home or away from the time he played in high school through the time that his grandsons played and his granddaughters cheered at the games. He remained close to his high school graduating class and organized many "senior" trips with the "Bronco Bunch" over the years. Jimmy was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed watching horseracing and hunting arrowheads, as well as playing 42 and other games. He was always ready to share the history of Sonora and Sutton County and gave countless historical tours to friends and strangers and strangers that became friends over the years. He never met a stranger, in fact he often looked for people to whom to extend his generous hospitality.

Jimmy is fondly remembered by his wife Linda Cahill, his daughter Kelly and husband Terry Owen, and children Rebeckah, Reagan, and Gage Owen; son Chacho Cahill and wife Dawn and children Lane and Carson Cahill; his sister Diana Condra; Linda's daughter Amy Love Sykes and husband Blayze and children Paige and Chase Davis, Alexa and Harry Morin and Blayze, as well as numerous extended family and friends. The family would like to extend special thanks to Carlos Perez, numerous doctors and healthcare specialists, Hospice of San Angelo, and Dr. David Cummings for his friendship and loving care.

Services will be held Thursday June 10,2021 at 1:00 PM at the United Methodist Church of Sonora. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Helping Hand Fund, PO Box 1150, Sonora, TX 76950, Eaton Hill Nature Center and Preserve, 500 City Hill Road, Sonora, TX or the charity of your choice. Jimmy was a good friend and generous employer to my late husband James and was very supportive of our family during James' illness and death in 1990. He was solely responsible for my being able to be with James in the New York hospital for almost 2 months. I will never forget that. We always looked upon him as a good family man who was loyal to his friends as well as a great businessman. He will certainly be missed but leaves a fine legacy in his beautiful children and grand children.

I am so glad we came to see you guys in Oct of 2016, just before my husband died. I told my husband for years about by cousins in Sonora. He was so impressed with both of the cousins and how they treated us. Jimmy gave us a tour of the ranch while he was not feeling well due to chemo. The degree of kindness was amazing. I have two distinct memories of Jimmy. One when we were in Colorado on the ranch in 1958 then the last visit. Both are forever etched in my heart. God speed Jimmy.
