Jamie Poteet Obituary

Jamie T. Poteet

San Angelo

Graveside service for Jamie T. Poteet, 86, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015, in Fairmount Cemetery, directed by Johnson's Funeral Home.

Born in Caddo, Oklahoma, Poteet moved as a child with his parents, James Thomas Monroe and Mamie Lou Malone Poteet to San Angelo. He graduated from San Angelo High School, attended Duke University and graduated from Cornell University on the GI Bill. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Trained in hotel management, he joined a major chain that assigned him to operate hotels and clubs in pre-Castro Cuba, Puerto Rico and Chile. He taught English in Cyprus and Greece. His aunt, Ann Poteet, taught three generations of San Angelo students.

Retiring from his longest tenure as club manager near Chicago, Poteet returned to San Angelo more than 15 years ago to care for his aunt Lucretia, who died at 103. For a brief period, he managed the San Angelo Country Club in the 1990s. Always self-effacing, he managed food and lodging operations as if invisible, never drawing attention to himself.

A longtime patron of the arts, he served for a time on the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts board of trustees, giving paintings, time and money for its success, according to Howard Taylor, SAMFA director. Poteet helped set up the art museum's Children's Art Museum formerly located at the Cactus Hotel. He had custom-made furnishings created that continue to be used in the museum's children's programs. He also was a stalwart supporter of the symphony and other music programs.

No close relatives survive him. His chief caregiver was Hilda Ramirez. Handling many of his other affairs were Lupe and Janie Trevino, as well as three Trevino grandchildren, Christian, Jaime and Chastity.

Cousin Jamie, I called him Jim Tom until later, if one has a favorite Cousin , was it.
So blessed I was to be around him and his side of my family, thinking of Penn and Betty Claire and Tom And Kitten. In a chair lift in Aspen I met some people from Chicago who adored Jamie as the Manager of the Onwentsia Club. Later as a young Texas Rube he entertained me with friends in tall bldgs on the Gold Coast and just being Jamie when he took me out to Onwentsia, but people don't know how deep grew his Texas roots. I am so bummed that our last conversation was too long ago. And, by the way, he started the resurgence of the Gerome in Aspen as one of his first assignments. RIP my beloved Cousin and friend.

Jamie and I first met back in 2000, I lived just up the street from him in historic Santa Rita from 1997 to 2002 but, after leaving I always felt the draw to return to visit him and did so for many years. Thanksgiving was always carved out each year to venture back to sunny San Angelo to spend time with him. He is sorely missed but Rika and I are forever grateful to have known him and his memory will warm are hearts eternally.

Jamie, If Bob could write this he would remind you of your your "infamous" trip to Ft. Lauderdale in 1950 something, where you and Archer were
escorted to the city limits. The first of many great stories from you all, such great memories from you all and I was lucky enough to share in them after the fact. Gods peace to you dear friend, I will miss our long conversations via the phone, you've been in our memory book and our thoughts. Judy Minium (AND Bob too).

It was a pleasure helping Jamie "stay in shape" as his personal trainer from 2008-2013. I think he enjoyed lunch after his workout session more than anything else. Great memories with our other lunch buddies (Bernard, Jane and Charles Forester, Gary, Sukie, Trey, and a few others). I wil miss him reminding me not to "spend all my money", all his business advice, and most of all his good heart. We will all miss you Sir, but we will see you soon!!!
