Selma Winkler Obituary

ODESSA Selma Winkler passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in Fort Stockton, Texas. She was born in Dallas, Texas, on Dec. 1, 1927. She attended Highland Park High School and received her B.A. degree from Southern Methodist University. She worked in Dallas as an administrative assistant for Sanger Harris. In 1948, she met the love of her life, Edward Winkler of Fort Stockton, and they married on June 12, 1949. During the years she raised her two children, Selma was active in the P.T.A and both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and she volunteered in school teaching touch typing. She was a long-standing member of the Fort Stockton Garden Club, the Texas Historical Society and Temple Beth-El of Odessa. She served as president of the Magno Usi Study Club and of the hospital auxillary, where she served for 23 years. In 1999, she was named First Lady of Fort Stockton. Selma enjoyed playing bridge, both duplicate and in the local bridge clubs and she was a highly skilled cook. She had a keen memory for family history and events and wide-ranging reading interests. At various stages of her life she enjoyed playing volleyball, ping pong, bowling and tennis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; daughter Katherine; and her younger sisters, Marcia Barvin and Ruth Albert. She is survived by a sister, Carole Jean Shlipak and brother-in-law Louis of Irving, Texas; a son, Martin Winkler and daughter-in-law Maureen of Lawrence Kan.; son-in-law Bob Rhoades; and two grandsons, Nathan Winkler-Rhoades and Dr. Ruben Rhoades, all of Philadelphia. The family wishes to recognize the kind care Selma received near the end of her life from Irma Rojas, Isella Ramos, Idali Sanchez, Yolanda Delarosa, Edna Martinez and Hortensia Chavarria. In leu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity. A service commemorating her life will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 6801 E. Business 20, Odessa, Texas, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, Rabbi Holly Cohn officiating. Friends are welcome at the family home from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, as they begin the traditional seven day mourning period. I first knew Selma when we worked together as leaders of a Girl Scout troop in which her daughter Kathy and my sister were members. She was the sweetest lady and bi enjoyed knowing her so much!!!!
