Tommy Harp Obituary

SAN ANGELO Tommy Harp Sr., 75, of San Angelo, went home to be with our Lord, Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, after a four year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and children. He was born Nov. 7, 1934, to H.T. and Martha Harp. Tommy was a self-employed paint contractor for 50 years. He enjoyed being around people and helping others in need. He was a lifetime member of the San Angelo Emergency Corp, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, San Angelo Boys Club, and the Salvation Army. It also brought him great joy to help with Meals for the Elderly. He had a way of making everyone smile with his kind words. He married the love of his life, Joan, on May 10, 1953, and for 57 years they had a wonderful life together. We as a family have so many wonderful memories of our time we were given with our Dad. Dad was very devoted to our mother and loved her with all his heart, as he also did each of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Gwen Sharp; and his loving in-laws, Mary and Red Ratican. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Joan; his children Tommy Lynn and wife Elaine, Carrie Woodard, Terri Latham and husband Mike, and Robby Harp; his grandchildren Chasidy Woods and husband Sam, Traci Kirkland and husband Keith, Amie Pinnock and husband Dietrich, Tanner and Cade Latham; and five great-grandchildren. Also by a very special friend for many years, Raymond Taylor. A very special thank you is extended to our sister Carrie from her brothers and sister for the role in the care of our Dad. Also a special thanks goes out to Kathy of VistaCare, Angel Care, Dr. Untalan and Dr. Hunt. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Johnson's Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens immediately following. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Derald Weddle, Bren Weddle, Gary Ayers, Mickey Shott, Carey Sartain and Royce Latham. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Alexander, Gerald Jones, Raymond Taylor, and Bill Henry. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to VistaCare of San Angelo. Family and friends may sign the online register book at www.johnsons-funeralhome.com. Dad, What an honor it was to be your son. I always knew if I got in a tight spot that you would be there to support me and get me through it. I could always count on you to give me room to grow, but to stay close by me and let me know if I was growing too fast. You taught me the value of hard work and the rewards you reap for a job well done. Thank you for giving up so much that your family could have everything they need plus a few extras that they just wanted. I'll miss that wonderful laugh of yours and that twinkle in your eye when you saw your grandchildren and great-grandchildren walk through the door for a visit. I know I'll see you again someday. Love Always, Tommy Lynn Dad, You were the most loving man I've ever known. I was truly blessed to have been your daughter and to have been with you and help take care of you as you struggled to beat this terrible disease that took you from us. I have many fond and wonderful memories of the time we spent together. We certainly enjoyed watching NASCAR together and enjoying a fresh seafood dinner when you came for a visit. You will always be my HERO. Love you Daddy, Carrie Daddy, Life as we have known it will never be the same, but I know in my heart you will still be letting Tanner know how proud of the young man he has grown to be and also know you will still be cheering Cade on in his football games and track events. Daddy, I've been so lucky to have had you as my Dad. Love you daddy, Terri Lyn Dad, I know our life together has had plenty of bumps along the way, but deep in my heart I've always loved you and hope one day to be the man you would want me to be. I'll think of you and remember our good times and common bond of NASCAR. Love You, Robby

We only knew Mr Harp for a short time during our stay in TX. Thanks to his daughter, Terri, we were able to have this man touch our lives. Through his family, his legacy will continue to touch other people. We do not feel sadness in his passing but one of celebration. He will be able to bring to all who have passed before us, the happiness that he shared on this earth. Barb and Marty Arquette (Canadian Lakes MI)
