Glenda Martin Obituary

Glenda Hays (Womack) Martin August 26, 1943 - June 12, 2024 Glenda Hays (Womack) Martin, the sixth of ten children of Elisha and Dessie Mae Womack, was born on August 26, 1943, in Jacksboro, Texas. As a child, the family moved to Graham, TX, where she made many life-long friends. At fifteen, she met and married Andy Martin after winking at him as he performed with a gospel quartet at church. Sixty-five years of adventure ensued.

The couple subscribed to the "my home is where you are" philosophy throughout their lives. As such, their lives took them to farms in Arkansas and Texas and high rises in China and San Francisco. Always one to make the best of any situation, Glenda learned Chinese and traveled the country with family and friends. Her generous heart and spirit endeared her to many natives who grieve her loss along with her family and friends.

The couple retired to the small east Texas town of Bogata. Glenda's door was always open as she helped neighbors file their taxes and work through other types of issues. Food was her love language, and pies and cakes regularly went out of her back door with those visitors. One only needs to open her grandchildren's freezer to find shelves of frozen cookie dough ready for baking. If there was a sale at Kroger on ham, then a neighbor in need found one on their front porch. Nothing brought her more joy than filling her daughter's freezer while visiting Nashville.

Glenda was a fierce defender of the underdog and always fought for justice. And she loved just as fiercely. There was nothing more important than family. If she was on your side, you could be sure you would be vigorously and actively defended and supported.

Glenda passed away on June 12, 2024, after suffering a stroke. She is survived by her husband, Andy Martin, and three children: Don (Kathy) Martin, Tucson, AZ; Cindy Martin, Nashville, TN; and Mike (BethAnn) Martin, Centennial, CO. She was loved by ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her legacy will live on. A Celebration of Life is being planned and will be shared later.

Glenda encouraged me to take painting lessons with Jammie Carter and Carol Busbe after my retirement, made amazing wedding cakes for my two nieces, prepared our taxes and we enjoyed her generosity. We also went to Paris every morning for aerobic exercises. We were neighbors and friends. Although we were not in contact after leaving Bogata, I often thought of her and will miss her forever. Our deepest condolences to Andy and all their family.

Glenda was my dearest friend. I met her, Andy and their children in Rifle, Colorado in (I think) 1981. We had fun times in Colorado and even more when we both lived in Plano, Texas. I miss her dearly. I love you. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.

Aunt Glenda would help anyone in any way. She wouldn´t let me leave her house unless my belly was full of something delicious and delectable.

My name is Wanda (Huff) McCoy. Her mother, Dessie (Huff) Womack, and my dad, Merle G Huff, were siblings. Glenda was married before I was born in 1953. Even though I didn't get to know her, if she was anything like her mother, she was a kind and caring person. I am so deeply sorry for your loss of a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Our prayers are with you.

One of the kindest women I´ve ever known. She made me the most beautiful wedding cake almost 17 years ago and I still talk about it to this day. She had a gift! She was a beautiful soul!
