Earthrise over Ralph Baldwin's Moon.

Those few who had the privilege of exploring the Moon in person, as well as those who continue to explore the Moon and planets through samples and remote sensing, built on the foundations set by Ralph and the many who were so profoundly influenced by his thoughts and logic.

I never knew him except through his books and papers but right from the first time I read them, they struck me (a science writer covering planetary science) like a cool wind on a witheringly hot day.
His good sense, clear arguments, and beautifully arrayed evidence were outstanding in a field that was full of fanciful ideas, even from well-established scientists.
He was a giant in the field of solar system science.

I have revered Baldwin's great contributions to lunar science since the early 1960s when I started working in the field. I was honored to have met him when he visited the Lunar & Planetary Lab in Tucson in the 1960s - we went to a western style restaurant that used sizzors to cut off ties, which set the stage for an informal meal and discussion. We exchanged a few letters when I was writing my first paper about central peaks in lunar craters and he was gracious and helpful.
In reading the other comments I see that Baldwin has had many other interests beyond the Moon in his very full life!

It is with great sorrow that the Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America mourns the passing of Ralph Baldwin.
Mr. Baldwin was an active leader of the WMMA and he holds a place near and dear to its heart. In 1983 the association initiated the Ralph B. Baldwin Award, an honor bestowed annually to a member of woodworking industry fraternity not only for his or her contributions to the industry but, like Ralph, for his contributions to the communities in which he lived and served. Since 1983 twenty-seven individuals have received the coveted award. We are proud of each of them and indebted to Ralph Baldwin.
We express our sincere condolences to the Baldwin family.

Dr. Baldwin was a dear man, one whom I enjoyed talking to and sharing past memories of Mayflower Church as well as time when we knew each other when he was at Oliver Machinery and I was at the Employer's Association.
I have such respect for him as a person, his infinite knowledge of astronomy which was a topic of great interest in my own family, as well.
He gave much to the betterment of this world and will be missed by many, including me.

I met Dr. Baldwin at his office in 1980, when running a paper route from my home on Maryland street in Grand Rapids (one of my customers knew him, knew of my interest in astronomy & planetary science, and arranged the meeting). I knew I was going to meet a great man when I peddled my bike to the Oliver Machinery building, and saved the scrap with his address, which I have in front of me now... He was very generous with his time, and gave me some good advice for getting started in the planetary sciences. That advice has remained influential to me in the years that followed, and thanks in part to that meeting, I have been privileged to become involved in a number of planetary missions. I am currently working as a postdoc researcher at the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera Science Operations Center at Arizona State University, where Dr. Baldwin's books are still regarded as essential resource materials for lunar science. Thank you, Dr. Baldwin; you were a true visionary and will be missed. -James Ashley

For all that is written here, what I remember is being bounced on his knee; his rushing me to Butterworth for emergency appendectomy and going back home to find my doll; the soft smile when, having just learned to carry books on my hip did so with a pizza box and dumped pizza all over Division. We went back for anothe...r....; walking across UM diag, to look up and see him coming toward me; rescuing me at 6 when the boat went turtle. I was perfectly fine in the cockpit air - and he was frantically diving to find me...; and the letter with a check during college: "Enclosed, in here, in haste, love Dad (you oughta...)" Well, I did.

While I never knew Mr. Baldwin, his daughter Pam has always been one of my favorite people. She told great stories about both of her parents, and I am sorry I never got the chance to meet them. My thoughts and prayers are with you Pam. Love- Sam Ford Collins
