Browning — Daniel Thomas Harwood given the Blackfeet name "Thunder Pipe Horse", passed away peacefully at the age of 76 at his home on The Harwood Ranch, on November 11,2017.

Dan being an elder of the Blackfeet Tribe was born in Sisseton, South Dakota November 3, 1941 to Robert E. Harwood and Iola M. Barse. He attended North Dakota school of Science. There he was a multi-sport athlete, as a short stop in baseball and a full back in football. Winning the conference championship in 1962. In 2010 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

After being medically discharged from the military, he met the love of his life, Jo Ann Show. They moved to Billings and he studied Business. Dan married Jo Ann on September 3, 1966. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as the Administrative Assistant. At the time of his retirement in 1995, he was Acting Superintendent for the Blackfeet Agency. He worked for the BIA for 35 years.

He will always be known as "papa". He enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was horseback riding in the mountains, cooking on the grill, being at brandings, shooting gophers and more recently mowing his lawn with his brand new John Deere riding lawn mower. He enjoyed his $10 for $10 on Wednesday at Glacier Peaks Casino. Dan loved being surrounded by family.

Dan is preceded in death by his mother, father, two brothers and a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife JoAnn; his children Nikki (Roy), Danette (Terry), Stephanie, Jesse (Crystal) Harwood. Eight grandchildren and six great grandchild.

A wake is being held at Old Eagle Shields in Browning with Rosary at 7 pm on Thursday. Mass will be held at 2 pm Friday at Little Flower Parish in Browning with burial following at the Harwood Ranch.
