Shelly Mahoney Obituary

Shelly (Clapshaw) Mahoney, 40, of Great Falls, died of a gunshot wound Thursday at her residence.
Funeral Liturgy for her and her husband, Donald Mahoney, is noon Wednesday at St. Ann's Cathedral, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Shelly Kay Clapshaw Mahoney, a mother of three boys and a fourth-grade teacher at Mountain View School, died tragically at her home, Thursday, November 11.
Shelly was born May 30, 1970, in Great Falls, Mont., to Bob and Sandy Clapshaw. She attended Morningside and Roosevelt elementary schools, Paris Gibson Junior High School, and Great Falls High School, graduating in 1988. While growing up, Shelly and her family lived for many years at Ryan Dam, where her father was foreman for the Montana Power Company. During her elementary and secondary school years, Shelly and her family were involved in a constant swirl of scouting, basketball and outdoor activities, including camping, fishing and snow and water skiing. While in high school, Shelly worked at the Cine 4 Theater.
After high school, Shelly attended the University of Montana in Missoula, studying a wide variety of subjects, and later working there for Taco Treat. During summer breaks, she worked as a meter reader for the Montana Power Company in Great Falls and Missoula.
While in Missoula, Shelly met her future husband, Donald Mahoney, also from Great Falls. Shelly and Don were married at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Black Eagle on July 3, 1993. They immediately moved to Honolulu, HI, where Don was posted as a platoon leader in an Army infantry unit and Shelly worked in the paint department of a large home improvement company (the type of job she would hold later in other places, including Forsyth Paint and Decorating Company in Great Falls).
After Hawaii, Shelly and Don were posted to Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Wash. When Don's Army commitment was completed, they returned to Missoula, and then moved back to Great Falls, where Don became a Great Falls Police Officer. He then joined the full-time cadre of the Montana Air National Guard in Great Falls.
Back in Great Falls, Shelly and Don started their beloved family of three sons: Dugan Mahoney was born to them Aug. 17, 1998; Declan Mahoney on Aug. 29, 2000; and Donovan Mahoney on Dec. 27, 2002.
Shelly finished her college work at Montana State University - Northern in Great Falls. Juggling a very busy life as a wife, mother of three boys, school, and a part-time job, Shelly graduated from Northern in 2003 with her teaching certificate in elementary education. While at Northern, she was an excellent student and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (an honor society based on scholarship, leadership, service, and leadership).
Immediately after graduation, Shelly's joined the Great Falls Public School District as a substitute teacher in 2003. The next year and thereafter, she taught fourth grade at Mountain View School, where she quickly earned the respect, admiration, and gratitude of her students, fellow teachers, and school administrators alike.
Shelly possessed a great sense of humor and a wry/ironic wit as her family, friends, workmates and students can all attest to. She was fun and funny: a great storyteller, mimic, and a big tease.
Shelly was a devoted, dedicated, and involved mother, with a highly developed ability to juggle numerous (often competing) obligations and commitments. She managed a constant "blizzard" of family, school, sports and church activities. She and Don believed strongly in the redeeming qualities of sport and competition and encouraged/supported their sons in their athletic pursuits, including traveling widely throughout the state for wrestling matches and tournaments. They all enjoyed and spent a great deal of time in the great Montana outdoors, including precious times at the family's Holter Lake cabin.
Shelly's faith in God was rooted in her early family life and continued when she married Don and joined the Catholic Church. The Mahoney's made their faith the centerpiece of their family life and were active members of St. Anne's Cathedral and Our Lady of Lourdes School.
Shelly's untimely death leaves a stunned and devastated legion of family, friends, and associates. She is survived by her three sons, Dugan, Declan, and Donovan Mahoney; her mother, Sandy Clapshaw; her sister Katie Clapshaw McCluey, Katie's husband Gavin, and their children, Ellie and Jake; her fraternal grandmother Dorothy and husband Milo Steichen; her father-in-law, Dell, and mother-in-law, Bev Mahoney (all of Great Falls); and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Shelly was preceded in death earlier this year by her beloved father and an iconic Great Falls figure, Bob Clapshaw; her maternal grandmother, Sally Bader; her maternal grandfather, Murph Jacobson; and fraternal grandfather, Harlan Clapshaw.
An account has been set up at Wells Fargo "For the Benefit of the Children of Don and Shelly Mahoney." Memorials for Shelly may be made in this name and sent to Wells Fargo, 21 3rd St N, Great Falls, MT 59401.
Condolences may be posted online at www.schniderfuneralhome.com and/or www.gftribune.com/obituaries.

It’s with a broken heart I try to write, yet words cannot express our tragic loss of our dear cousin and friend in Shelly! I could express anger on her behalf for a beautiful life cut far too short, but I know that Shelly would want us to remember the good times and honor her by loving and supporting the three “Shelly-like” boys who will live on remembering their wonderful mom.
I enjoyed Tana’s message, you put a smile on my face with your wonderful memories!
I thank Stacey (Lewis) for being the first of three of us (cousins) to have each other in our weddings, as friends come and go but cousins are FOREVER! And that certainly hold true, today and always! It also seems so appropriate, as one of my memories are the matching dresses we always received for Christmas from Gramma Dorothy and Grampa Milo! Even miles cannot stop a wonderful plaid mushroom top with matching plaid pants! I remember staying at Ryan Dam with Shelly, and running around the area with Tana too! Staying upstairs in Shelly’s cool room, the wonderful wood floors that creaked and told everyone “someone’s coming”! The piano near the stairs that Gramma would play and we would all gather around and listen to the beautiful music! My favorite thing is hearing Uncle Bob’s laugh and his favorite thing was to harass Shelly and Katie and all their friends and family!
We are honored to have such a wonderful family. Aunt Sandy, your faith and your strength is remarkable and I want you to know we love you dearly. To Katie and Gavin, we are eternally thankful for you, so thoughtfully and generously you’ve opened your home to the boys and you will change their lives forever by your love. May you be Blessed beyond comprehension for your compassion. To the Mahoney boys, know you are and have always been loved….by those close to you and even those that are distant by miles, but not by heart. We love you and always will.

Shelly taught my son, Quincy, for fourth grade, and she was a wonderful teacher, and a genuinely nice person. She was an asset to the Great Falls School District. What a HUGE loss to the community of Great Falls, and to her boys. I am just so, so, so, so, sorry.

On behalf of my children Terrell and Aryana, we send our deepest condolences. Mrs. Mahoney was both of their teachers. This year, Aryana's and 2 years ago Terrell's. They both absolutely adored her. She was always going above and beyond as a teacher, being a friend, counselor, and mentor. Seeing her after school at football and wrestling always lifted the kids spirits. She was truely a blessing to the community and is missed. I know that one thing my children are finding comfort in is that Mrs. Mahoney knew the Lord. We used to run into her at the Christian book store and the kids would engage in a quick game of hide and seek, my son trying to quickly clean his glasses before he was found and told to clean them up! God bless the family in their time of mourning and grief.

Sandy and Katie,
Shelly was truly a special person. I enjoyed growing up together with Shelly as kids to young adults. I will always remember the sparkle in Shelly’s eyes and her beautiful smile. I remember riding horseback from Morony Dam to Ryan Dam to watch movies, skiing together at Showdown and the many hours spent on the school bus. I wish that I would have stayed in better touch with her after heading off to the Army. We get so caught up in the speed and direction of our own lives that we sometimes lose touch with the special people around us. Shelly was definitely a special person in my life. Our prayers and blessing are with you and the family during this time of healing. If we can be of any assistance at all please don’t hesitate to call.
Sincerely

To the Mahoney family--Shelly and I went to MSU-Northern together as we both worked towards our teaching degrees. She was such a beautiful person--inside and out. I am so sorry to hear about the tragedy that has struck your family and took Shelly so soon. Please know I am praying for all of you and I will continue to lift your family up in prayer in the coming weeks, months, and years. I can't even begin to imagine the pain in your heart. May God's peace give you some measure of comfort in the wake of such a tragedy and the loss of one so loved and dear to your hearts. I pray the memories you carry will provide solace for your grief. Katie, Mrs. Clapshaw, and Families,
Shelly & I went to junior high and high school together. Even though we never were in the same social groups, I always had admiration for her and held her in very high esteem. She always "carried" herself with pride and confidence. As adults we would see each other at our children's various events. She was beautiful inside and out. I am so sorry for your loss. May faith in God and memories comfort you all.
My prayer and sympathies.

November 16, 2010

I am writing this with a heavy heart but still knowing that Shelly would want us all to be joyous.
It was a summer day when the Clapshaw family became my new neighbors at Ryan Dam. Little did I know how the would change my life. Shelly and I were polar opposites, but quickly became friends. We were stuck together by circumstance but bound together by choice.
It seems like it was only yesterday that we were skiing at Showdown;fighting over a boy at playland(she always won);or just hoping that her dad wouldn't embarrass us in front of that boy.(he always did)
Sandy always insisted that Shelly practiced her piano, and ensured that I didn't foil the practice. To this day I can still hear Sandy "kindly" telling me in a way that only Sandy could "Tana go home, Shelly will call you when she is done!" Thank you Sandy for teaching me boundaries and of course how to properly iron a shirt.
Shelly thank you for being my friend and sharing your family with me.
Rest in peace, love

Sandy and Katie,
Reading the guest book today, you must feel honored, proud, and privileged to have known and loved Shelly as a dear daughter and sister. it is also a true testimony of her goodness, by the teacher she was, reading how her students and their parents are remembering her with love and respect. I, too, value some of my children's teachers who were just like her. Children know and remember the teachers who really cared about them and made a difference in their lives. Also, fond memories of being involoved at ECNA with Bob, Sandy, Shelly, and Katie The Lady. God Bless guide and keep you. Melinda ( Mimi) and Ron Winchell

My prayers go out to all of the friends and family of Shelly and Don. The memories will live forever in our hearts. I cherish all of those times Shelly came to my office at Mountain View and the laughter we shared.

Some of my best memories of the teachers in the district revolve around the playing of Bunco with you and your group. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones at this time.

Mrs. Mahoney was my son's 4th grade teacher. She went above and beyond what a teacher does. She took a special interest in him even after he had moved on to the 5th and then 6th grade. She is an exceptional teacher, and will be GREATLY missed.

Shelly had a big impact on countless people including my step-daughter whom she taught at Mountainview. She was always encouraging and supportive to her. She displayed a real true caring for the kids and their future. Our family is eternally in her debt and she will always be remembered for her warmth and kind heart. Rest in peace Shelly. This city mourns and misses you.
