Steven Berberet Obituary

LEWISTOWN - Dr. Steven Paul Berberet, 54, a longtime Lewistown primary care physician who was active in the Lewistown community, died of cancer Monday at a Lewistown hospital.
His funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Lewistown, followed by a community picnic lunch at Frank Day Park. Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Townsend. Central Montana Crematorium is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; children Shayna, Clayton, Kimberly, Makayla and Tiffany; his parents, Bill and Grace Berberet; eight siblings - Dr. Jerry Berberet at Carroll College, Dr. Richard Berberet at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Barbara DeMartin, who, with her husband Rick, operates the Berberet family ranch in Toston, Jane Ann Peacock of Imbler, Ore., Jeanni Balint of Jackson, Wyo., Mary Beth Berberet and Patricia Vazanko of Spokane and Albert J. Berberet of Belgrade, Mont.
Well-known in central Montana in obstetrics and family medicine, Dr. Berberet had practiced in Lewistown since 1982.
Affectionately known as "Dr. B" by his medical colleagues and numerous patients alike, Dr. Berberet was noted for his diagnostic and treatment skills and his commitment to excellent patient care. Throughout his illness of several months, he received an outpouring of support from this professional and patient community, for which his family is deeply grateful.
Steve Berberet was born April 23, 1953, in Townsend, Mont., the sixth of nine children of Bill and Grace Berberet, a ranching family in nearby Toston. He attended schools in Toston and Townsend, graduating from Broadwater County High School in 1971. In addition to football and track, he was active in 4-H, where his projects included dairy, beef, swine, tractor, gardening, range management and junior leadership. Among his achievements were his selection to participate in the Western 4-H Roundup in Denver and Montana 4-H Congress in Bozeman.
Dr. Berberet graduated in 1975 from Carroll College in Helena with a 4.0 GPA, and attended medical school at the University of Washington, where he graduated in 1979.
In 1980, he married Kathleen Sullins of Casper, Wyo., whom he had met during medical school. Steve and Kathy departed for Duluth, Minn., where Steve completed his residency in family practice.
Steve and Kathy then came to Lewistown to establish a practice that consumed his entire subsequent career. "Dr. B" quickly came to love the Lewistown area, not the least for the bird hunting, fly fishing, hiking and other outdoor opportunities it afforded.
Dr. B's devotion to family care and obstetrics quickly led to a thriving practice. He was particularly committed to providing obstetrical care in central Montana; indeed, in 1988-89, Dr. B was the only physician who continued to deliver babies in Lewistown and the surrounding area.
Steve and Kathy were full partners in his medical practice, where Kathy served as office manager. They were also devoted partners as parents, adopting five small children.
Dr. B's 4-H background carried over in his involvement with his four daughters in 4-H horse projects in Lewistown. His dedication to this experience for his daughters made him a familiar figure at 4-H horse clinics, shows and fundraisers for Lewistown's active 4-H horse club. Similarly, he was committed to the participation of his son Clayton in Boy Scouts and to all of his children in myriad sports and other activities.
Dr. B was dedicated to improving medical services in central Montana. He served on the hospital board and executive board of the Central Montana Medical Center and the board of the Central Montana Medical Center Foundation. He served stints as medical director of Central Montana Mental Health Center, Central Montana Family Planning and Fergus County Public Health Nurses. He received the physician recognition award from the American Medical Association every year since 1989, and was recognized as outstanding health professional by the Lewistown Jaycees. He was also a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and served on a number of councils and commissions. He thoroughly enjoyed singing in the church choir.
In lieu of flowers, friends of Dr. B are invited to contribute to one of the following: the Dr. Steven Paul Berberet Memorial Scholarship fund at Carroll College, Carol College Office of Advancement, 1601 N. Benton Ave., Helena, MT 59625; the Central Montana Medical Center Foundation, attn. Ann Tuss, 310 Wendell Ave., Lewistown, MT 59457; or St. Leo's Catholic Church 102 W. Broadway, Lewistown, MT 59457.

Dr. B was our personal family physician, & in September 2005 delivered our first grandchild. His warmth, compassion & uncanny ability to really listen to his patients will be sorely missed. He will be a hard act to follow in those respects. Never before have I met a doctor who truely cared for his patients with such depth. Dr. Berberet, we miss you. Best wishes, & our deepest condolences to Kathy & the children.

Steve and I were lab partners for a couple of classes at Carroll. He was a great guy to work with - - calm, focused, and good-humored - - even when things were not going according to plan.

I clearly remember his devotion to three things - his God, his family and his vocation to be an excellent physician. From what I read here, he maintained these all his life. I am proud to have known Steve and am better for the experience.

He and his family are in my prayers.

Kind, compassionate, caring, gentle. So many words come to mind when I think of Dr. B. He was my doctor back in the eighties and delivered my daughter in November of 1986. He was an awesome man, no doctor before or since has measured up to him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. B's passing recently. I now live in Casper Wyoming and read about it in the local Newspaper. He was a marvelous man, treating my entire family and delivering my youngest daughter while we lived in MT. I enjoyed working with him for the 7 years at CMMC. Thank you so much Dr. B for all that you did for myself and so many others. You touched many lives and will be forever missed.

Steve Berberet was the first person I met when I arrived at Carroll College in the fall of 1971.He and I were roommates our Freshman year and what a great time we had..Steve was one of those people that everyone liked and because he was so darn smart, our room was like a study haven for other students needing help..
He could also be frustrating because of his photographic memory, he never forgot anything!!!
We had some great times together and I enjoyed meeting his Toston family and hunting there one fall. The things I admired about Steve was his passion and dedication to his family, his profession, and his faith..He will be greatly missed and I am proud to have had him as a friend all these years...

I only knew Dr. Berberet from working with him as a colleague for many years who shared many patients. He was a wise caring physician who was clearly loved by his patients. He was the kind of physician all of us can only hope to emulate. He will be greatly missed and had an impact far beyond Central Montana. My sympathies and prayers are with his family and many friends.

Steve was a classmate of mine at Carroll College from 1971-1975. He was incredibly smart, the most gentle and unassuming man imaginable, and always smiling. He was a disciplined student, but he also seemed to be able to balance that with spending some time with friends. In reading the biography of his life, he would never have thought "what do I want my obituary to say?" He just lived in a way that everyone looked up to and loved him for the kind caring person he was.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Kathy and kids.

What a terrible shock to hear of Dr Berberet's death. Only yesterday I had read in the L-town paper that he was no longer practicing because of ill-health and today I read in the Gazette that he has passed on to a greater and gentler place. Dr Berberet served as mine and my son's (Elvis and Heath) physician when we lived in L-town during the 90's. What a wonderful and kind man he was. His story was certainly greater than I ever knew. His goodness touched the hearts and soul of many throughout his life it seems. Obviously, he will be missed. My sympathies and prayers to all his family and friends. God be with you during this time and may his healing grace bring you swiftly to the sun-filled memories that will keep Dr B in your hearts always.

Dr B’s family

What a kind and remarkable man.
The easiest man to like.
He gave our family constant confidence
with his care and wisdom.
We didn’t need him very often but we knew if we did he was there and he was the best. The best.
His effect on our family is forever.
I feel the loss of a treasure and know your loss is that of a bigger sort and we grieve with you.

I was a classmate of Steve's at Carroll College from 1971 to 1975. My association with Steve was one born of absolute respect for his tireless ability to use time wisely and use his multi-disciplined drive to attain the highest quality from every course offered at Carroll. I was drawn to him because of his easy smile and good nature away from the classroom. I was also drawn into friendship with him because of his natural ability to lead and particularly because of his steadfast moral and physical courage in mastering a curriculum at Carroll that was and is known for being particularly difficult. Inspired with a sense of purpose and urgency, Steve was unrivaled in in pursuit of professional excellence. I took some of those early lessons learned from Steve and applied them successfully to my own life. Thanks Steve!
