Dally, Alfred David, MD

MADISON - Alfred David Dally, MD, 85, passed away on April 25, 2015, at AGrace Hospice in Madison, Wis., leaving a legacy of compassion, generosity, integrity, and humor. He was born on May 12, 1929,, in Green Bay, to Friedrich and Anna Louise (Georke) Dally, the seventh of ten children and the third to be born in the U.S. after his family emigrated from West Prussia, Germany (now Poland).

Alfred attended Norwood Grade School, Franklin Junior High School and West High School in Green Bay, and earned his airplane pilot's license at the age of 16. After graduating, Alfred hitchhiked cross-country, working in construction in Los Angeles, Calif., and as a handyman at Eatons' Ranch in Wolf, Wyo.

In 1948, Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War in the 802nd Aviation Engineer Battalion, SCARWAF, in Okinawa, Japan, and South Korea. He was Honorably Discharged in March, 1952 with the rank of Staff Sergeant, receiving the Japan Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

Alfred attended college on the GI Bill, studying at UW-Green Bay and UW-Madison, then transferring to the University of Texas-Austin and earning his BA in Psychology (major) and Industrial Engineering (minor) in 1956. He went on to attend Marquette University School of Medicine (now Medical College of Wisconsin) in Milwaukee, receiving his medical degree in June, 1960.

On June 11, 1960, Alfred was wed to Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Herald, with whom he had five children.

Alfred's postgraduate training included a rotating internship at San Diego County General Hospital, California, a staff physician position at Mendota State Hospital (now Mendota Mental Health Institute) in Madison, and an Internal Medicine fellowship and residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

From 1966-79, Alfred practiced Internal Medicine at Quisling Clinic, Madison General, St. Mary's, and Methodist Hospitals in Madison. He also taught at UW-Madison Medical School as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine from 1969-83, served as Physician Advisor for WPS Insurance from 1976-2004 and as Medical Consultant for EDS from 1996-2008.

From 1978-96, he served as Chief Medical Officer/Medical Director of the Medicaid Program at the State of Wisconsin Bureau of Health Care Financing, DHS, retiring as Physician Advisor to Chief Medical Officers/Medical Directors in 2002.

During his lifetime, Alfred remodeled two homes, including one designed by Herb Fritz. He also enjoyed fine art painting and was an avid music lover, excelling as a self-taught audio engineer and filling that role for live performances of the Christian group "Sonday," of which his wife was a member. He also wrote and published two books, Experiences and Choices: A Mini-Memoir and As I See It: A Christian's Beliefs and Values, and was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan.

Alfred is survived by his five children, Lyn (Scott) Geboy, Jane Dally, Amy (Jonathan) Overby, Peter (Lisa) Dally andMary (Kevin) Dally-Muenzmaier, as well as four grandchildren, Elizabeth Geboy, Sydney Geboy, Isabella Dally-Steele and Robert A.J. Dally-Steele. He is also survived by three sisters, Ruth Dally, Lois (Jerry) Fletcher and Audrey (David) Martin, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend Mary Elizabeth "Beth" (Herald), his parents, three brothers, Harry (Opal) Dally, Wilfred (Gerda) Dally and Donald Dally, one sister, Dorothy (Marvin) Pott, one brother-in-law, Marvin Pott, one sister-in-law, Gerda (Elhardt) Dally, as well as two siblings lost at birth.

A celebration of Alfred's life will be held on Thursday April 30, 2015, beginning at 12:30 p.m., at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Friends and family may call from 11:30 am until time of service.
