David Long Obituary

David R. "Shorty" Long

Village of Howard - David R. "Shorty" Long, 59, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, January 29, 2018 from natural causes. He was born on April 25, 1958, to Milton "Lefty" and Bernice "B.C." (Watermolen) Long.

David met Laurie Dalebroux in 1985 and on September 21, 1991 they were married in Green Bay. Most of his career, David sold the "Big Rigs", recently working as a sales associate for Peterbilt in De Pere.

David's life revolved around his family, especially his children. He was proud of the fact that he coached each of their softball and baseball teams. When not on the field, there was nowhere he'd rather be than in the bleachers cheering on his children. He was so proud of all of them!

David enjoyed the simple things. He was happiest cooking and grilling for his family and friends, relaxing in his pool, watching the Packers or Badgers, golfing with the boys, and fishing. Recently he was able to take a much-deserved fishing trip to Canada with his son, Nick.

When his children were younger, summer evenings were spent sitting on the porch with Laurie watching the neighborhood kids play tennis baseball in the street. David had a loud voice and an infectious laugh. He wanted everyone around him to be happy and would do anything for those he loved.

David is survived by his wife, Laurie; three children, Hannah, Kaitlyn and Nick; three brothers, Gary and Joyce Long, Al and Kathy Long, Pat and Margie Long; brothers-in-law, Gary (Alice) Dalebroux, Mike Dalebroux, Rick (Val) Dalebroux; sister-in-law, Sue List; nieces and nephews; Rick, Linda, Danny, Karla, Mike, Tim, Jessica, Sara, Tayler, and Jenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lefty and B.C. Long; a brother, Ron; a niece, Kim Long; in-laws, John and Vera Dalebroux; and sister-in-law, Trudy Dalebroux.

Friends may call at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2597 Glendale Ave. (one quarter mile east of the corner of Cardinal Lane and Glendale Ave.), from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family. To send online condolences, please go to www.BlaneyFuneralHome.com.

A special thank you is extended to St. Mary's Hospital Pastoral Care, Chaplain Steve Fewell, as well as the First Responders and the staff of EMS Howard Rescue Dept.

We promise you, Dave, we will forever be "Long Strong." All our love, Laurie, Hannah, Kaitlyn, and Nick.

R.I.P. my old friend. It was great to reconnect with Dave these past few years. We spent a lot of time together in our early years tearing it up! I'll never forget the many Brewer's bus trips, Badger's games and rec league outings, or the moments just hanging out with friends at Herbies and Connie's. It was one hell of a ride and I would not trade the experiences we shared for anything.

To our dear friends,
We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers and always in our memories. So blessed to have shared the time with you and Dave that we did during our summers of softball and get-togethers. The time surely passed quickly during those busy years, but we wouldn't trade them. So many wonderful experiences and friendships were gained during that time.
Memories are precious treasures. May they help all of you during this difficult time and carry you through the days ahead.

Laurie, My prayers are with you and the kids, I was devastated when I found out about Dave, all the memories came back, the kids playing in the cul-de-sac all day and night. Halloween when Dave would take the golf cart out with the trailer on the back, to take all the kids out for trick or treat, never forget when we were selling our house and the sign was always missing because Dave would pull it out, he did not want us to move out of the cul-de-sac, I can remember all the 4th of July's that were spent lighting off fireworks for the kids, Dave you will be missed by everyone, you thoughts were always about how everybody else was doing and cred about all the kids in the cul-de-sac.
Buddy I will see again.

My sincere condolences to all of Dave's family for the loss you are experiencing...
This is tragically way too soon, and I share your sorrow.

Though we had limited contact in recent years, there are everlasting memories spanning from being rambunctious youngsters into adulthood within the old 12th Avenue & Shadow Lane neighborhoods, besides some up north adventures...
Seemingly endless days spent exhausting ourselves in every spectrum of sports, hanging out at Fisk Park, biking all over town.
We all had owies from emulating Evel Knievel.
Dave generally had the latest music releases to entertain us with, plus we would listen to Bill Cosby, Cheech & Chong and George Carlin while laughing hysterically.
We spent enormous time racing slot cars, playing cards, board games, building makeshift contraptions of all sorts, not to mention typical pyro obsessions that boys are so naturally inclined to.
Somewhat exclusive I'm sure, were routine Summer evenings attempting to save the city by decoying & eradicating swarms of terrifying Bats from the night sky by flinging handfuls of gravel, frequently hitting one another, and never the intended targets.
Lefty generally would reel Dave back in for the night with a clockwork immeasurable holler that could be heard acres away, collectively signaling all of us to meander home to settle in, & restlessly imagine what tomorrow could yield.

Days just don't come as leisure anymore as we stride to keep pace...
When I think of Dave I am sure to pause and smile, knowing he influenced many similarly.

Rest in peace my friend,
Jim Armstrong

Dave and I went to school together (West 76), lived near each other for a short period of time, and we both worked in Men's Wear at Montgomery Wards after high school.
He was a great guy and was fun being with. Last time I ran into him was in the parking lot of a hotel in Marquette, MI. Turned out we were both traveling with sales jobs and happen like the same hotel. It was a nice surprise.
I remember one year he came to my Halloween party dress as a guy from Kiss. He did a excellent job with the outfit and even had some platform shoes if he wasn't tall enough already.
My very best to his family.

Our condolences to you Laurie and family, David will always be in our hearts. I had many wonderful times golfing, and seeing Dave thru the years at Al's hunting camp.

To The Long Family:

My name is Paul Meder, grew up across the street from The Long Family. David, Bernice & Lefty and the entire Long Family treated me like family...meals, laundry, rides to school ect.

When my mother died at 15 (Helen Meder) the Long Family were there for me. Can never re-paid the kindness. Just last year David and I reconnected...set up plans to get together for a Packers game. David reminded me of being in his Dad's "work car" he put the lights and siren on...we laughed hard. Jim Armstrong called me today to tell me the news of David's sudden passing. So sorry for this news....David will be missed...Condolences to the entire Long Family for your loss. Paul Meder, Thousand Oaks, Ca.
