Gary Patterson Obituary

Patterson, Gary

It is with great sadness that we announce that Gary Patterson passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015, as a result of cancer. He was born Anthony Gary Patterson on March 12, 1941 to Emerine (nee Renee) Portier-Melotte Patterson and Leland Patterson in Green Bay, WI.

Gary attended West High School and married Patricia Baumgart in 1961. They divorced in 1989.

From a very young age certain words described Gary - curious, inventive and tough. In many ways, this description defined him throughout his life.

Small engines. These two words are synonymous with Gary's name. Those who knew him, considered Gary the best small engine repairman around. If you had a lawnmower, snow blower, or chainsaw that wasn't working, Gary could get it running. In fact, he enjoyed the challenge so much that he would often pick up anything lying on the side of the road just to see if he could get it working.

But…this was just one of his many talents. He could sight in a rifle with the best of them; build anything out of wood (especially birdhouses and outdoor furniture); weld just about anything; and make a mean dumpling!

One thing he was very proud of (besides his children) was his "shack" up north. This was his favorite place to be. A place where he felt most at home. A place that he built. A place where he worked hard. A place that meant the world to him.

Besides his many talents, Gary was also a hard worker - and prided himself on that. He worked at Tape, Inc. for 43 years, retiring in 2003. He operated his machine like no other. In fact, his work ethic was so strong (almost as strong as his stubbornness) that he was late only five times in all those years.

The day he retired, they shut down all of the machines and held a reception line for him. This was something that he always remembered and was touched by.

Gary will be sadly missed by his children: Steven (Mary) Patterson, Greenville, WI; Lisa Moore, Green Bay, WI; and Douglas (Vickie) Patterson, Green Bay, WI; grandchildren, Sarah, Alex, Austin, Jamie and Parker; brothers, Lee (Nancy) Patterson and Craig (Terry) Patterson; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kevin Patterson and aunts and uncles.

Family and friends are invited to help us honor Gary at Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Avenue, Green Bay. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 6:30 p.m. Online condolences may be expressed at www.lyndahl.com.

Special thank you to his wonderful neighbors who truly cared about him and watched over him. Thank you Eric, Jim & Becky, Tony, Wendy & Courtney, and Dave & Lori. They lost the "ambassador" of the neighborhood. Here's to Gary, "Brandi dog", a Diet Coke, and the Garage.

I remember Gary fondly as a frequent visitor in my office when I was "The Nurse" at Tape. Not always as a patient, but also as a friend who would just "pop in" to say hello. He was such a very sweet man. He loved his dog, and always talked about his place up north. I have thought of him often through the years. My condolences to his family and friends. Judy
