Claire Rand Obituary
May 11, 1965 - July 11, 2025
Claire Johnson Rand passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, friends and her beloved dogs, on July 11, 2025, in Durham, North Carolina.
Born on May 11, 1965, Claire was a graduate of Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, and continued her education with a BA in British history at the University of the South (Sewanee) in Tennessee.
Claire found joy in the company of her precious dogs. She shared her life with her cherished companions that included Oliver, Katy, Lily, Cartwheel, Drama Queen, Bella, Earl, Norwood, Iris, Little Bit, Lulu, Algernon, and Crispin.
Claire was an accomplished horseback rider and avid participant in Red Mountain Hounds fox hunts. She loved the camaraderie in the outdoors among fellow enthusiasts riding her beloved horse, Babe.
She is survived by her dogs Algernon and Crispin, her sister Caroline Johnson, and her former husband Walter Rand. Claire was preceded in death by her father, J. Allen Johnson, and her mother, Shirley S. Johnson.
A memorial to celebrate Claire's life will be held at the Berkeley Cafe, located at 428 S. Dawson Street in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Saturday, July 26 at 1:00 p.m.
In honor of Claire's lifelong affection for animals, donations may be made to your local animal shelter.
We will love her always.

Claire and I were roommates at St. Mary´s College in Raleigh, NC (1984-85). We lost touch after graduation, but I have such great memories of our year together.

Claire was a student at St. Mary's College in one of the half-dozen best classes of my forty-seven year teaching career. She was always prepared, made thoughtful comments and had a wicked sense of humor. I am so sorry to read of her death, for I cannot forget what she shared as my student. On the table next to my bed is a picture of Claire, Lori Durden and Elizabeth Williams striking an R. Crumb pose on the front lawn of St. Mary's...so it's about the last thing I see every night when I turn out the light. To me she will always be in her late teens and thus a really good kid.
