Clay Hassard Obituary

Hassard, Clay

November 3, 1961 - February 9, 2024

Robert Clay Hassard, 62, of Greensboro, NC passed away Friday, February 9, 2024. Clay was born in Waynesboro, VA, and grew up in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1980 where he was an accomplished student-athlete. Clay played basketball and was a high jumper who was known for jumping his own 6'6" height. However, he was best known as an all county offensive lineman who was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and then played at UNC Chapel Hill on a football scholarship for two years. He then transferred to Elon University where he graduated in 1985 (BS) and 1989 (MBA). Clay received numerous athletic awards but was most proud of being selected as an Academic All American while playing football at Elon University. Upon graduation, he began his 36 year career at Elon University, where he retired in 2022 as a Senior Associate Athletics Director.

Clay was preceded in death by his father Thomas Arthur Hassard Jr., mother, Susie Hartbarger Hassard and brothers Chally and Tim. Clay is survived by his wife Elizabeth whom he met at age 17 and was married to for 36 years, daughters Allison and Claire (Stuart), brothers Ashley and Sam, sister-in-law Lisa, brother-in-law Bill and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his athletic and career accomplishments, Clay was known for his spot on sense of humor, his level headedness and his outstanding cooking abilities. He loved trying new recipes, discovering new spice blends and cooking nightly dinners for his beloved girls. Family and friends especially looked forward to eating his sourdough bread, grilled salmon and mashed potatoes. Clay will be dearly missed by his family and friends, as well as the Greensboro, Charlotte and Elon communities.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 19, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC. It will also be live streamed on the First Presbyterian Church's website. A reception will immediately follow in the Virginia Gilmer Room.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Phoenix Club at Elon University to support NCAA student-athlete scholarships. Phoenix Club, 100 Campus Dr, 2500 Campus Box, Elon, NC 27244
