HIGH POINT EARL EUGENE HASKINS, 83, HUSBAND, FAther, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018, at his residence. He was born August 1, 1934, in the Callands community, Pittsylvania County, Virginia to the late Turner C. and Fannie Amos Haskins. He graduated from Callands High School in 1952 and attended Lincoln Memorial University 1952-1956, graduating with a BS degree in Physical Education Sciences. He lettered four years in baseball and was chosen all conference, was inducted into LMU's Athlete Hall of Fame, served as secretary of his sophomore class and was a member of the Sigma Pi Beta Fraternity. Upon graduation, he signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers and played on The Panama City Flyers of the Alabama-Florida league. He served his country for two years in the U.S. Navy, and then returned to spring training with the Tigers at Lakeland, Florida. He was assigned to the Decatur Commodores of the Midwest League, where he finished his professional baseball career. He coached varsity sports and taught science at Whitmell High School of Pittsylvania County, Virginia for 3 years. He joined the Sears Roebuck team and worked for 16 years managing the Customer Service and Central Services division in Danville, VA, Wilmington, NC, Macon, GA, Richmond, VA and Miami FL. He retired from Terminix-Triad as Vice-President of Operations where he worked for 23 years. One of his most cherished honors was having a trophy named in his honor presented annually to an outstanding employee He was a member of the Oak Ridge Christian Church of VA and later a member of Vandalia Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, NC where he served as Elder and Sunday School Teacher. Upon moving to High Point, he joined First Presbyterian Church of High Point where his wife, Annie, had been a member for 30 years. He served as Elder for two terms, on the Missions and Stewardship committees and with the help of others, started the "Career Connection" ministry helping individuals seeking employment. He recently attended a Presbyterian Pilgrimage weekend, sponsored by his church and led by North Carolina Presbyterian Pilgrimage. In this program he found spiritual nourishment and deepened faith that helped carry him through recent difficult times. He was grateful for the loving support he found among the friends he made on his weekend and in the 4th Day Community. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Annie, his Springer Spaniel and loved companion, Buddy. He was a member of two Senior Golf Associations where he enjoyed the fellowship of fellow golfers. He also relished the times fishing, hunting deer and wild boar with son, Brian. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death on November 21, 2017, by his wife, Annie Ellington Haskins. Mr. Haskins is survived by one son, Brian Keith Haskins and wife Brenda; one daughter, Lisa Haskins Shepherd; a step-son, Mark Ellington and wife Tama; grandchildren, Megan Haskins and Gabrielle Shepherd, Matthew Ellington and wife Talat, Marissa Fegley and husband Matt, Brian Hurley and Lindsay Hurley; great-grandchildren, Nora Ellington and Isaac Ellington; his brothers, Clark Haskins and wife Laura, and Kenneth Haskins; and his sisters, Lena Oakes and Terri Lovell and husband Chris. Memorial service celebrating Earl's life will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 7, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ken Broman-Fulks officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Condolences may be sent to the family online on Earl's tribute page at www.cumbyfuneral.com.
