Emily Skenes Obituary

Skenes, Emily Roberta

Of all the joys in life, the big ones and the small ones, a mother's love and tenderness are the greatest of them all.

It brings us great sadness to announce that Emily Roberta Skenes, daughter of the late Robert and Mozelle Skenes, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend, nurse, and community member. Even though her physical body has been taken from this earth, her spirit and light will remain in all of us forever.

Emily graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1961. She attended Elon College, College of Lake County, and Guilford Technical College where she graduated with a degree in nursing. She spent her career working in various hospitals throughout the country but ultimately returned to her hometown of Greensboro, N.C. where she worked at Wesley Long Community Hospital. After many years of service, she retired as a well-respected Registered Respiratory nurse.

Emily was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star: Rose Chapter 178, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Triad Court Order of the Amaranth and Odd Fellows. She was also a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, located in downtown Greensboro, N.C. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards with her friends and grandchildren. She dedicated herself to improving her community through work with the Guilford County Board of Elections, and volunteering at Wesley Long Hospital and the American Red Cross. Emily, or Gommy as her grandchildren called her, was always encouraging wild and quirky adventures that somehow always ended with a milkshake in hand or hanging out under her sunroof to watch fireworks at the baseball stadium. She also enjoyed watching football and NASCAR. Even if you weren't interested in sports, she ensured everyone around her was up to date on the current scores and team rankings.

Emily is survived by her children, George Harvey Mosher, of Greensboro, N.C. and Jodie Mosher Graves and husband Richard Michael Graves jr. of Richmond, Va. She was blessed with three granddaughters: Emily, Mozelle, and Kiera Bargamin. Additionally, she leaves behind brother Robert Skenes, his wife Mary, nephew Robert Skenes and wife Vanessa, and their children Lauren and Allison. Additionally, Emily was also blessed to be a grandmother to Caroline and Colin Graves.

The family has entrusted Forbis and Dick funeral home to handle the final wishes of being cremated and laid to rest next to her mother and father here in Greensboro, N.C. In place of a formal funeral, A celebration of life will take place on Friday, April 7, 2023, 11 a.m. at Friends Home Guilford located at 925 New Garden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410 in their main living room.

"Momma your footsteps can never be filled, nor your love is ever forgotten."

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in Emily's honor to: The American Cancer Society at 4 Oak Branch Drive Suite A, Greensboro, NC 27407 or, Authoracare Hospice at 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro NC, 27405.

Emily and I corresponded often through our high school years. I was privileged to attend her sweet 16 party. It was a great party and a lot of fun for everyone that sttended. I treasure the memory of Emily and the times we were together.
