Ginger Calhoun Obituary

Ginger Gibson Calhoun

May 9, 1953 - June 28, 2024

Ginger Gibson Calhoun of Kernersville, NC, died unexpectedly Friday night, June 28, 2024, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Born in High Point, NC, she was the second daughter born to Henry Arthur and Polly Gibson.

Ginger graduated from Andrews High School and was editor of her high school yearbook, the Reverie, her senior year, 1971. Ginger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from UNC Greensboro. Extremely well read, Ginger enjoyed the works of William Shakespeare.

Ginger then went to Appalachian State University where she achieved her Master of Psychology degree that launched her career as a School Psychologist. For thirty years, Ginger served young people and their families in Davidson and Forsyth Counties. Upon retirement, she briefly taught Psychology at Forsyth Technical Community College.

Ginger met her husband, David, on a blind date in 1991. They discovered a hidden desire to travel and were fortunate to travel throughout the USA. Ginger especially enjoyed European travel. Ginger and David spent time in more than 10 countries. Their best memories were of their summer in the United Kingdom and their month in Paris. Ginger also traveled with family members to European capitals.

In addition to husband David, Ginger sincerely loved her sisters, Julia Calloway and husband Dean, Jane Kimrey and husband Bill; and her mother, "Nana" Polly Gibson. She also held her stepson, Joshua, his wife Amanda and their son, Jonathan David with deep affection.

Special emphasis must be placed on her devotion for her nieces and nephews because these were the "Stars in Ginger's Sky", Kevin Calloway, Laura and Lucas Ferguson, Molly and Aaron Reeves, Jon and Stephanie Kimrey, Mary and Mark Pitts, and Kathryn and Joey Dunn. We must include her great-nieces and great-nephews, all equally adored by their "Aunt Ro."

It would be a mistake to omit her furry friends, Waldo, Goldie, Cosmo and Harry from her list of special companions.

Ginger lived a life of integrity, intelligence and purpose. Most of all, hers was a life well loved.

The family will have a small service of celebration and memory at a later date. We are always grateful for the love of our Creator that was alive in this dynamic woman.

Those who wish to, may make a donation in Ginger's memory to their favorite charity. Ginger supported "Smile Train," "Doctors Without Borders," and any charity that protects our animal friends.

Ginger was one of the kindest people I´ve ever known! She was a wonderful school psychologist. I taught mentally handicapped children and she was so, so good with them. The world has lost a bright light!

I was fortunate to call Ginger a best friend. She was such a great listener and so dependable. I have known her from our college days at UNC-G and all of us from 8th floor Reynolds got together yearly. I was looking forward to seeing here this week when in Greensboro. We are all getting together August 26 to celebrate her. If there is a service please let me know.
