Mary Kyle Obituary

Mary Lou Perryman Kyle, 84, of High Point, North Carolina, passed away on March 22, 2026. She was born on December 20, 1941, in Lewisville, North Carolina, to J.I. and Louise Perryman.

Mary Lou attended High Point University, where she earned her teaching degree, and later received her master's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Over the course of her career, she served in several teaching positions with Guilford County Schools, worked in administration, and later became a professor at both High Point University and UNCG, sharing her love of learning with generations of future teachers.

The love of her life, and husband of 59 years, Jerry Kyle, passed away in 2021, a loss from which she never fully recovered. Mary Lou was also preceded in death by her son, Perry Kyle, and her granddaughter, Stephanie Douglas.

Mary Lou loved books, children, her family and her faith. She is survived by her daughters, Kim Kyle Douglas and husband Bill Douglas of Jamestown, North Carolina, and Amy Kyle Goodman and husband Lee Goodman of Ogunquit, Maine and her daughter in law, Trish Kyle of High Point, NC.

Her seven grandchildren were her greatest joy: Sidney Wolfe and husband Gray Wolfe, Melissa Douglas, Madison Kyle McGee and husband Seth McGee, Taylor Kyle, Jackson Kyle, and Walker Kyle. To her grandchildren, she was "Grandmother," known for her tea parties, endless storybooks, and shared viewings of The Sound of Music, creating memories they will treasure for a lifetime.

She is also survived by her greatgrandchildren, Oakley and Easton Wolfe and Lucas Perry McGee.

In lieu of flowers, please bring a children's book (or two) to the funeral; they will be donated in Mary Lou's honor to the Montlieu Academy of Technology or make a donation to your local library.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Cumby Funeral Home on Friday March 27, at 2 p.m.

In a final act of devotion to the profession she loved, Mary Lou has donated her body to the High Point University Willed Body Program. Even in her passing, she continues her life's work-teaching the next generation of medical professionals and serving as a silent mentor to those who will go on to heal others.

I did my student teaching with Mary Lou during my senior year at Guilford College. She was a wonderful mentor to me! She recommended
me for my first teaching job at New Garden Friends School in the early days of its founding and also for another position at Rankin Elementary. She encouraged me to work hard and progress in my career with the Reading Recovery program which was a major part of my life. She also taught workshops throughout the country for a local teacher support company where I worked for a couple of weeks. I referred her that time! She was the best teacher I ever knew and I always strived for her to be proud of me. I retired in 2011 after 30 years of teaching because of her love for the profession and for me! She will be missed by all who knew her!

I knew Mary Lou during my career with Guilford County Schools. She was a role model for literacy, most significantly as she helped many of us become Reading Recovery teachers. Always positive and encouraging. My favorite memory of her was when she drove our group of Reading Recovery teachers to Columbus, Ohio one summer for a week of training sponsored by Ohio State University. She was so determined to get us there she drove us herself! In addition, she took us to a different ethnic neighborhood/restaurant each night so we could experience their food and culture. We all loved Mary Lou. She was an amazing woman!
