I did my student teaching with Mary Lou during my senior year at Guilford College. She was a wonderful mentor to me! She recommended
me for my first teaching job at New Garden Friends School in the early days of its founding and also for another position at Rankin Elementary. She encouraged me to work hard and progress in my career with the Reading Recovery program which was a major part of my life. She also taught workshops throughout the country for a local teacher support company where I worked for a couple of weeks. I referred her that time! She was the best teacher I ever knew and I always strived for her to be proud of me. I retired in 2011 after 30 years of teaching because of her love for the profession and for me! She will be missed by all who knew her!

I knew Mary Lou during my career with Guilford County Schools. She was a role model for literacy, most significantly as she helped many of us become Reading Recovery teachers. Always positive and encouraging. My favorite memory of her was when she drove our group of Reading Recovery teachers to Columbus, Ohio one summer for a week of training sponsored by Ohio State University. She was so determined to get us there she drove us herself! In addition, she took us to a different ethnic neighborhood/restaurant each night so we could experience their food and culture. We all loved Mary Lou. She was an amazing woman!
