James Raleigh Obituary

Raleigh, James Wesley

August 11, 1934 - January 26, 2022

James "Rab" Raleigh, Sr. was born to the late Luther Raleigh, Sr. and Lucille Staples Raleigh.

He graduated from Dudley High School in 1953, having served as the president and treasurer of his class. In 1958, he married Barbara Mae Ingram and they were happily married for over 63 years. He was employed as an electrician for Western Electric in Greensboro, NC and AT&T in Winston-Salem, NC. At AT&T he was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He retired from AT&T in 1989.

In 1968, James became the scoutmaster for Troop 159, and during his 15 years of leadership the troop won many awards for outstanding scouting. James was a kind neighbor and was willing to lend a helping hand, doing any type of electrical, plumbing or carpentry work.

As a life-long member of Persimmon Grove AME Church, James served faithfully many years as an usher, sexton, asst. superintendent, Sunday School leader, Finance Committee and Cemetery Committee member, and as a steward and trustee, where he served as chairman.

James enjoyed bowling, playing softball, making brooms, and being with family and friends. He was known for making his fudge and peanut brittle candies.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories: his wife, Barbara Mae Ingram Raleigh, a son, Barry Raleigh, a son, James Raleigh (Tonya), a daughter Traci Miller (Calvin); 5 grandchildren, Calasia, Triniti, Celeste, Taj and Calvin III; 3 sisters, Dorothy Jessup, Judy Frances, and Jane Rhodes; a brother-in-law John Harris; 2 sisters-in-law Alice Griffin (Ernie) and Anna Raleigh, and many other relatives and dear friends.

A viewing will be on Saturday, February 5, 2022, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel.

A service honoring his life will be held on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Persimmon Grove AME Church located at 408 Dolley Madison Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Interment will follow at Persimmon Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Raleigh, Barry, James, Traci. Offering my sincere condolences to you, all your family. I remember Mr. Raleigh as a kind, gentle and jovial man, with a great sense of humor, and who enjoyed smoking a nice cigar. He/your family were one of our earliest neighbors in the community, and he was always well-respected and though of by myself/the Watson family. I Pray for your Strength and GOD's Love for each of you now, and in the days to come. May the many good memories of Mr. Raleigh comfort you and bring smiles to your faces now, and as time progresses. May you find a measure of comfort knowing that his spirit is in great company amongst all the Ancestors, Friends, and Our LORD in the heavenly realm. It is my belief that when our hour comes, we'll be reunited with our loved ones in spirit and "happiness" once again.

May GOD's Peace and Grace be with each of you.
