John Marsicano Obituary

Marsicano, John Joseph

March 6, 1928 - May 4, 2022

John Joseph Marsicano died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, May 4, 2022. He was born on March 6, 1928 to Frank and Frances Marsicano in Amsterdam, NY, where he was raised with his five brothers and sisters: Sophie Marsicano, Carmella Romano, Anne Coluni, Albert Marsicano, and Vito Marsicano.

In 1948, John graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch Senior High School in Amsterdam, NY. In 1950, he received an associate degree in accounting and business administration from Albany Business College. Shortly after attending college, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. In 1955, he began his career in sales and transferred to Jacksonville, FL, where he met his lovely wife, Rosemary Brown. They married in August 1958. In 1960, he joined Kentile Floors as the district sales manager of the southeast region, where he had a successful 33-year career in Richmond, VA and in Greensboro, NC.

Within the community, John was devout Catholic at Our Lady of Grace Church, where he ushered every Sunday for 47 years. He was a member of the Third and Forth Degree Knights of Columbus, where he held various leadership positions. He was a Past Grand Knight, Past District Deputy, and Past Faithful Navigator. He also had a lifelong commitment to the Boy Scouts, starting in his youth and continuing with his son and grandson. Later, he became the assistant scoutmaster for Troop 107 where he enjoyed mentoring youth.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, summer vacations at the Outer Banks, sailing, and cheering for his favorite sports teams. One of the greatest thrills of his lifetime was visiting the birthplace of his parents in Italy.

John was a devoted husband of 63 years to Rosemary, who preceded him in death. He was a loving father and a proud grandfather. He is survived by his five children Reedy Marsicano, Mary Frances (Steve) Melink, Joan Whitacre, Marilyn (Gene) Clements and Jean (Jason) Hartshorn. He was a proud grandfather to Matt, Monica, William, Katie, Allison, Lauren, Laura and Ava and a great-grandfather to Cameron. He is also survived by his brother, Vito Marsicano, and many nieces and nephews.

Services for John will be held on Friday, May 13 beginning with a visitation at 1 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 2 p.m. Both events will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church at 2203 W. Market Street in Greensboro, NC 27403. Graveside service will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A reception honoring John will be hosted by the family from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Cafe Pasta at 305 State Street.

In his memory, donations may be made to the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church (The Grace Fund) or to a charity of your choice. Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home will be entrusted with the arrangements.

My deepest condolences to the Marsicano children on the loss of your father , Johnny. My father was John´s sponsor when he was confirmed as a Christian into the Church. His sister Ann Coluni was my Godmother.Sophie was my moms hairdresser for 75 years and Albert was our insurance agent. So we were close while living in Amsterdam but as always happens we all relocated throughout this wonderful country.
I last called and spoke to John a few years ago when his beautiful wife, Rose Mary was ailing and John was on a walker. True to form he was upbeat and positive and full of praise for my parents and what they did for him in the early days.
I got delayed in actually visiting John because of Covid and my surgeries ...my regrets.
I am comforted in the fact the John was a strong member of the Knights and the Church has passed into a new life with our savior. God bless you, Johnny.

Uncle John was the perfect gentleman and probably the most gracious person I have ever known. I will miss him dearly. It makes me smile to know he didn't have to be without his beloved Rosemary for too long.
