Michael Evans Joyce, 80, passed away April 26, 2024, after a short battle with cancer at Wellsprings Retirement.

Mike was born April 27, 1943. He spent his childhood on the family farm where he made many memories with his cousins and other family.

He graduated from Appalachian State with a degree in teaching. He loved helping children learn and grow. He worked for Guilford Co. School Systems until retirement.

After retiring, his love of antiques led him to become the owner/operator, with Archie Carter, of Lion's Crown Antiques in Greensboro.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Pansy Joyce, and Archie Carter.

Mike, being a true southern gentleman, will be greatly missed by many, many people whose lives he touched.

In honor of his wishes, there will be no funeral service.

Teaching with Mike in the Academically Gifted Program in Greensboro City Schools was a true joy. I am saddened to just be hearing of his passing. Mike was smart, kind and a real wit. He always had a smile and was always willing to.help.A newbie to the department. Later in years, he bought an antique hutch that had been in the Parrish family through many generations. He assured me it was something he wanted for his own home, knowing how precious it was to us. Mike's Partner, Archie, was also A kind and special person. Mike was a true gentleman and I am sorry we lost contact after Archie passed and Mike closed his antique store. Rest in the Light Mike and know there are so many who count your memory as a blessing.

Mike was one of those teachers you never forget. I had the great fortune of being in his GT class in 1981-1983 and he was a breath of fresh air and a true inspiration. Thanks for making the world a better place Mike, and enjoy your escapades in the next place!

Michael and I were good friends in college at Appalachian in the 60's. I remember great times hiking along the Watauga River and visits with each other's families. We lost contact in the 70's, but fortunately we reconnected in 2022 over 50 years later when he found my address. We spend a fine, summer afternoon sharing the lives we had led, trying to recall the names of folks we knew in college, remembering the past, laughing at the present, thinking about the future. We talked on the phone about every week catching up on 50 years. Death came too soon. We will all miss his wit and wisdom, his humor and humanity. Our reunion was brief but a blessing. I am grateful for the friends he had who now carry out his wishes.

He came to work in the academically gifted program for which I was an office support. I had the good fortune of working directly with Mike. He came to me one day with a chart as wide as the blackboard. I laughed, he laughed and the whole staff chuckled! He and I worked together on that to condense it to a page. What a gentleman he was and I so enjoyed working with him.
Several years ago, I ran into him at Tex and Shirley´s Restaurant. He was working a crossword puzzle at the time. I went over to his table and I said, How about a game of Scrabble, buddy? He Invited me to sit with him and we chatted for a while; laughing about various and sundry things. He was one of my favorite people, and I know he´ll be missed by many because he was a joy to be around with his great wit and pleasant personality.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I met Mike and Archie through a wonderful friend, Robert Wagner. Mike was such a joy to be around, and he did love his antiques as was evident when visiting him. He will be greatly missed by all his friends. Rest in peace Mike!

Mike and I started working together for Greensboro Public Schools in the fall of 1984 in the Exceptional Children's Department at the bequest of Joanne Clark, Director, of ECD. Mike was assigned to lead the Academically Gifted Program and I, the Speech Language Program. We worked side by side for 9 years prior to the consolidation in 1993. He was a dedicated professional, and a very kind and warm person. He also had a sense of humor which made working along beside him enjoyable. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. RIP, Mike. I hope that I will see you again some day.

Michael Joyce was a treasure to his community. He was funny, endearing and wildly smart. He lived his life well, to the full extent, until the very end. His love of antiques was reflected in his home; every visit like a trip to the museum. Knowing him was to love him. I will always value the short time I knew him. As will my partner-his caregiver until the end-Carlos Oatis. All our love, all ways Mr. Joyce. He hated when I called him that. :)

You taught me when I was a 4th grader at Bluford Elementary. I´m 55 now yet I learned things from you in those Monday classes that I remember to this very day. What a remarkable impact from a truly selfless and caring teacher. I´m honored to have known you Mr Joyce.
