THOMASVILLE Mr. Nicholas "Nick" David Sgroi, 23, resident of Thomasville, died July 28, 2016 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.Nick was born October 27, 1992 in High Point, a son to David and Tammy Pope Sgroi. A resident of this area all his life, he was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and graduated from Bishop McGinness High School in 2011. He was the 1-A 145 lb. state champion in wrestling and also played quarterback, linebacker and kicker for the football team. As a senior, he was recognized with the Male Athlete of the Year award. After graduation he attended Belmont Abbey on a wrestling scholarship and later Guilford Technical Community College for surveying and civil engineering. He was an avid golfer and loved snowboarding, his motorcycle and especially his dog Ryder. Nick grew up working every summer with his dad at their family business, Sgroi Land Surveying, and continued, most recently as a survey crew leader. His profession was a perfect match, considering his love and appreciation of the outdoors.Surviving are his parents of the residence; his brother, Samuel Sgroi; his maternal grandmother, June Stewart; his paternal grandmother, Constance Ross; his great grandfather, Cliff Stewart; his aunts and uncles, Julie Jones and husband Jeffrey, Shannon Pope and wife Alicia, Denise Davis, Jennifer Ross and Eric Ross and wife Caroline; his cousins, Frannie, Crew, Austin P., Cameron, John, Austin D., Ryan, Kate and Nico; and his former aunt, Heather Pope.A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Reverend Joseph C. Zuschmidt, O.S.F.S. officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Bishop McGuinness High School Athletic Association, 1725 N.C.
