Steve was an active member of his community, serving as a member on the Planning and Zoning board for The City of Eden, past Chairman of the Board of Directors for Rockingham Chapter of The American Red Cross, Past President of the North Carolina Fire Marshall's Association and later served as chaplain for several terms. He was active in his church; he served wherever needed.

He loved his city, especially his memories of growing up in the Draper area, playing softball, and was a proud father, extremely dedicated to his children's schools and activities.

Cherishing his memory, hugs, and abounding love are his wife of 45 years, Kathy Walker Hale; daughter, Stephanie Hale Dillion (Matthew) of Winston Salem; son, Steve Hale, II (Jennifer), of Charlotte; grandchildren, Walker Dillion of Winston Salem, Maxwell, Lucas, Adaline and Zachary Hale, all of Charlotte; mother, Ronelda J. Hale of Eden; niece, Christy Shore of Pelham; brother-in-law, David Walker (Ann) of Morehead City, and nieces, Connolly Walker of Chapel Hill, Kathryn Walker of New York City, and Shawn Kendrick (Josh) of Wilmington.

Steve was a proud grandfather, so much so that, if you ever encountered "Pops," he was pulling out his phone to show you the latest photos of his five precious grandchildren.

My thoughts and prayers are with Steve´s family. Steve dedicated long and exhausting hours to Rockingham County fire and emergency services. When I decided to become a fire service instructor Steve was my instructor. One class Steve gave each student a subject matter so to stand up and give a 5 minute presentation with no time to prepare. My subject was `How Much Is Enough´. As I rambled on I´ll never forget looking at Steve and his expressions on his face - ok, I think he´s talked enough! I also remember the many discussions we had about emergency management strategies at the NC Emergency Management Association conferences. To Steve´s family - he´s in good hands.

Steve and Kathy and Stephanie have been a part of my life for a long time. Stephanie, whom they loved, babysat my children. My father, Jimmy Wright, thought Kathy and Steve hung the moon. He will definitely missed! Our deepest sympathy is with you all.
Love, Sharon and Don Mozingo.

Steve's passing is a huge loss for the City of Eden and for Rockingham County as well as his beloved family. He was a giant of a man with a passion for life, and I am blessed to have considered him a friend. See you again soon, my brother.
