GREENSBORO On Wednesday, August 15, 2018, Thomas Nance, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Tom was born to Edgar Lee and Kathleen E. Caldwell Nance in Leaksville, NC and was the fourth of five children. During World War II, Tom met his future wife, Maralynn Pearce, while on leave, traveling by train from Florida to New Jersey. Tom loved to tell the story of how the conductor seated him next to the most beautiful girl and was told to take good care of her. They married after the war and remained devoted for the next 66 years until Maralynn's death in 2013. Tom was a graduate of Pace College in NY, where he obtained a degree in business. Eventually, he and his wife moved to Greensboro, where he continued his career in accounting. He retired from Starr Electric Company after 38 years, where he was office manager and corporate secretary. Tom had a deep love and commitment to his family, always supporting his children in their endeavors and education. He loved fishing at Buxton and Ocracoke, watching football and NASCAR. He will be remembered for his selfless acts and his ambition to rise from poverty. Last but not the least, his children will never forget he received Jesus as his personal Savior at the tender age of 88 and now rests in heaven. He leaves behind his children, Valarie Fitz-Gerald, Daphne Brooks (Ken), and Thomas Nance II (Michelle). In addition, Tom is survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2018, at Forbis and Dick-Guilford, 5926 W. Friendly Ave. in Greensboro with a funeral service at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Greensboro NC.
