MAYODAN William Donald "Donny" Montgomery, 87, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Hospice of Rockingham County. A 3 p.m. memorial service will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Mayodan United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick LeBaube and Rev. Randy Jessup officiating. Inurnment will follow at Mayodan Municipal Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Ray Funeral Home. A Rockingham County native, Donny was born on August 23, 1930 to the late Troy and Lottie Jackson Montgomery. Donny loved sports and played baseball for the Cleveland Indians from 1951-59. He also enjoyed playing golf. Donny volunteered for both Madison-Mayodan High and McMichael High, where he helped coach basketball and kept the time clock for football games. In addition to his parents, Donny was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Montgomery, and two brothers, Paul and Curtis Montgomery. Donny is survived by his wife, Shirley Atkins Montgomery of the home; daughter, Donna Noonkester of Madison; granddaughter, Kristen Noonkester (Hayden) of Madison; mieces, Kathy Gelb of Sanford, Judy Montgomery of New York City, and Tana Montgomery of Chapel Hill; and a sister-in-law, Polly Montgomery of Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mayodan United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 219, Mayodan, NC 27027.
