Virginia Whitmire Obituary

Mrs. Virginia Mendenhall Whitmire, 96, resident of 315 Creek Road West and Emerald Gardens, widow of Horace C. Whitmire, died June 9, 2008 at Emerald Gardens.

Born in Greer, March 24, 1912, she was a daughter of the late John Bratton and Minnie Cooley Mendenhall. She was a graduate of Erskine College and taught in the Greenwood School District #50 retiring from Blake School after many years service. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son, Horace C. Whitmire, Jr. and wife Caroline of Greenwood; grandchildren, Horace C. "Tripp" Whitmire, III and wife Lynn, Kathryn Whitmire Benjamin and husband Douglas, all of Greenwood, John M. Whitmire and wife Tara of Greenville; nine great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville with Dr. Anthony Hopkins officiating.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Horace and Caroline Whitmire, 315 Lodge Drive in Lodge Grounds from 5 to 7 Sunday afternoon.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
