Harriette Redington Obituary

HARRIETTE (PHILLIPS) REDINGTON 92, formerly of Greenwich, CT, Stamford, CT and Narragansett, RI, died in Kent Hospital, Warwick, RI on December 4, 2008 with her family at her side. Known to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as "Grammy," Harriette was born in New Haven, CT on December 27, 1915 to the late Rowley and Harriette (Wheeler) Phillips. She graduated from St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, CT and Pine Manor College in Newton, MA. Harriette was an active member of the Colonial Dames of Connecticut for more than fifty years. She was employed at CBS Fawcett and the Gourmet Galley in Greenwich, CT and after retirement, found her true passion in her work at the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop. Her love of her colleagues and the customers as well as the quest for discovering the treasures donated to "the shop" brought her much happiness and fulfillment. Her love of music and poetry was brilliantly shared with her family through the many original songs and poems written by Harriette. These songs were written to honor family weddings, milestone anniversaries and birthdays. Not a special event passed without Harriette penning verses with personal lines about the honorees, sung to a tune everyone knew. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, keeping up on the latest trends and news. She enjoyed learning to use a treadmill in her eighties and an iPod in her nineties. Harriette recently moved to Rhode Island with her daughter and son-in-law. In May 2008, she made the decision to move to Greenwich Farms in Warwick, RI. In her brief stay, she made many friends among the staff and residents. She truly enjoyed her friends at the lunch table and will miss their kindness. Harriette is predeceased by her first husband Thomas R. Fisher, Jr., her second husband Edgar H. Redington, Jr. and her sisters, Barbara Phillips Shove and Elizabeth Phillips Howland. She is survived by her sister, Jean Phillips McLeod of Essex, CT, her children, Harriette "Leyla" Anderson of Narragansett, RI, Mary "Molly" Hawthorne of Norton MA, Thomas R.F. Redington of Southport, CT, Rowley "Rey" Redington of Montclair, NJ, Nancy Ayre of Woodbury, CT and Deborah Imse of Bow, NH. Also surviving her are her devoted sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, her sixteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place at Christ Church, 254 East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, CT 06830 on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 AM. A private burial will take place at a later date at Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven, CT. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 in Harriette's memory.
