John McSharry Obituary

JOHN THOMAS MCSHARRY 96, Longtime Riverside Resident Surrounded by loved ones, John T. McSharry passed away peacefully at home on October 31 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was born on October 5, 1915, in Braintree, Massachusetts, to Thomas McSharry and Mary (Barrett) McSharry. John graduated from Bentley Business College in Boston, and began his professional career at Atlas Powder Company in Stamford, Connecticut. During World War II he served in the United States Coast Guard, stationed in the North Atlantic. Upon his discharge, John pursued a career in business finance working first for Hunter Douglas Corporation, and continuing through many years with the Bridgeport Brass Company and National Distillers and Chemical Corporation. Post-retirement, he worked at Torqmaster in Stamford, retiring in earnest in 2008, at age 93. He married Jean Kilcoyne of Stamford on November 11, 1950, and they lived briefly in Bronxville, New York. They soon moved to Riverside, Connecticut, where they raised their growing family, and where they resided for over 50 years. He is survived by Jean, his wife of 61 years, and their seven children: Timothy of Freeport, Bahamas; Jean-ellen of Stony Creek, Connecticut; Matthew of Riverside; Margaret of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Maureen of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey; Hugh of Nashville, Tennessee; and Aileen Marsh of Lutherville, Maryland; as well as his sister-inlaw, Anne McGrath of Chappaqua, New York. He will be missed by all of them, their spouses, his thirteen grandchildren and his niece, Moriah McGrath, as well as his beloved friend and caregiver, Judith Bowden. A funeral mass will be held in the chapel at Saint Catherine of Siena R.C. Church in Riverside, on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Catherine of Siena Church or to Kids in Crisis of Greenwich.

John came to work at General Clutch Corp. in the mid eighties and stayed with those of us who became TorqMaster until 2008. He was a most valued employee and a good friend to everyone at both companies. His experience, fine judgement, kindness and good cheer have been missed since his retirement. He will remain in each of our thoughts.

Matt and Family:

We are all very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. McSharry, our biggest fan during our softball years in town. Mr. McSharry became a Dad to all of us during those years, as well as one of the guys who would hang out with us after each game. Those were fun and memorable years for us and hopefully for you all. Mr. McSharry was a special guy who will be long remembered by all your friends.

Uncle Mac: the voice of reason in a crazy world... Strong, stalwart, funny, loving, and kind. They don't make 'em like you any more.
I love you very much, and hope you're enjoying the opportunity to finally take a break. I will miss you dearly.

Mr. McSharry, you are a shining example of what it means to love and serve your family. Your faithfulness and presence as you listened to, fed, and cared for your family are what I will remember most about you. Thank you for being the dad of my best friend Maureen. I see parts of you in her and it makes me chuckle. With love, Mary (Beindorf) Cartusciello
