Paul Patrick Obituary

Patrick, Paul R.
Paul Robert Patrick of Middletown, NJ died Wednesday, July 8 at Riverview Medical Center in New Jersey from Lung Cancer. He was 65. Paul was the son of the late Jessie Patrick, a former Special Education Teacher at Julian Curtiss in Greenwich and the late Muzz Patrick, a former player, coach and manager of the New York Rangers, both of Riverside. His late Grandfather was Hockey Hall of Famer, Lester Patrick.
Paul was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1950. The family moved to Greenwich when he was four. Paul attended Old Greenwich and Riverside Elementary Schools, and Eastern Junior High School. Paul went to Kent Boarding School in Kent, CT. in 8th grade, playing on the Varsity Hockey Squad for 4 years. In 1972, he received a BA in English from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY where he was an outstanding hockey player. He later attended training camp for the St. Louis Blues before playing for the Bridgeport Home Oilers.
Paul worked as a bond trader on Wall Street for many years before returning to hockey as a rink operator, coach, and most recently, a consultant/scout for the Washington Capitals.
Paul moved to Middletown, NJ in 1979 and was a well-known member of the community, coaching hockey at the youth and high school levels for over 30 years. He was a great story teller with a quick wit and a magnetic personality. He had a big heart and was always happy to lend a helping hand to friends and strangers alike. He was a wonderful husband and father and a great lover of animals.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Eileen of 37 years; three sons, Brian, Gregory, and Steven; brother Dick Patrick and his wife Debby of Oakton, Virginia; and two sisters Lynda Vargas and her husband Jorge of San Diego, California and Lori Patrick of Redding, Connecticut; his mother-in-law Doris Winters, FL. and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, July 17th, 2015 from 7-9:30pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Tindall Road, Middletown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Humane Society or the ASPCA.

10 Years have passed quickly. Even faster, the 62 years between now and when I met Paul in September, 1963 in the 2nd Form (8th Grade) at Kent School. His brother Dick lived a few doors down the hallway. The Patrick brothers were among the tallest kid in the school and I was the shortest. They literally stood out. Great guys! Paul lives on in vived memory--RIP!

On this 5th anniversary of Paul's passing he is still in my thoughts. I miss him greatly, especially our phone calls and talks of old times, friends and family. I have many fond memories of Paul which time will never erase. I was and still am proud to say Paul Patrick is a friend of mine. I'm thinking Paul would tell us all to keep our sticks on the ice and our heads up. You are missed Paul.

I look at the picture of Paul and have to smile. As a high school class and team mate, Paul was the best. Always upbeat and supportive. Larger than life. We need more like him today!

I can still remember the first time I met Paul . There were a few of the freshmen hockey players exploring the hockey arena during orientation week. The nets were sting on the concrete surface of the arena so we broke into an impromptu game of ball hockey. Out of nowhere appeared a tall lean kid who jumped in and stated to play. We stopped and told him the basketball court was across the field and so the laughter and team bonding began. We all agree that Paul was a positive person and impacted us all for the better. Too short a shift for such a person.
Sincere condolences to the Patrick family

If there was one person who could epitomize what St. Lawrence University represented it would be Paul Patrick. His quick wit, charm and outgoing personality made him a well known figure on campus. His dedication to SLU over the years as an alumnus was equally outstanding. Not only was Paul a classmate, he was one of my dearest friends. Paul always had my back; that's what defense is all about. Godspeed, my friend, I will miss you like crazy.

I am saddened to learn of Paul's passing. Paul was my roommate at St Lawrence and we played hockey together. I was the goal tender and Paul was my rock solid defenseman. I have many fond memories with Paul. The last time we were together was at the 40th St Lawrence reunion. Paul will be greatly missed by many.

In 1963, 8th Grade through graduation in 1968, Paul was a classmate at the Kent School, where he was the tallest and I was the smallest. I think everyone loved Paul; what was there not to love? Positive-spirited, a jock with a brain, self-deprecating. Loud and funny. And loyal always. I know all of our class at Kent will miss him very much. He's been taken from us way too soon. My best wishes to Eileen, to Paul's sons, to brother Dick. I'm so sorry for this huge loss to all.

Paul was an incredible leader, mentor, and coach. When I quit hockey he supported my decision and when I later won MVP of the swim team I'll never forget that he hugged me and told me how proud he was of me, it meant the world coming from one of my favorite coaches. I know Paul is happy somewhere.

I will always remember Paul even tho I don't live in Highlands, NJ anymore. My son is a big Capitals fan and whenever he came into Foodtown to shop, we would talk about hockey and what was going on!! He was going to get the team to sign a stick for my son!! RIP Paul!!

Coach Patrick was an amazing man with a heart of gold. He would do anything to help a kid in need, and would give his last dollar if need be. as one of his pupils at Middletown South, he took the extra time to teach and pass along all the knowledge that he had about the sport. A towering man without fear on skates. He will be deeply missed. My condolences to the Patrick family during this difficult time. May his memory live on for many, many years to come.

A giant man with a giant smile and great sense of humor. It was always a pleasure refereeing ice hockey games when he was behind the bench as a coach. A real gentleman who really knew the game. I will miss him dearly.
