Fred Martin Obituary

Fred J. Martin passed away on Tuesday, August 28 at the age of 78. He was born in Long Beach on July 31, 1929 and was the son of Jerome B. Martin and Lucille Galbreath Martin and brother of Jerry L. Martin. He graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in 1947 and attended Long Beach City College. Fred served in the Army from 1950-1952, where he was stationed in Japan. He joined the Long Beach Fire Department in 1956 and earned the ranks of Engineer and Fire Captain. He retired from the LBFD in 1984, and was forever proud to be a member of this great brotherhood where he was lived up to his nickname "Fearless." Fred married the love of his life, Katherine Alice Crump, on September 6, 1953 and they were joined by their many friends and family members as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003. Fred was a modern-day Renaissance Man - an extraordinary all-around athlete and accomplished outdoorsman who excelled at whatever he pursued. He won championships in swimming, diving and archery, earned a black belt in karate, and was a competitive table tennis player who won gold medals at the Fireman's Olympics and was a member of the Long Beach Table Tennis Club and the Orange Coast Table Tennis Club. He was a longboard surfer and member of the San Onofre Surf Club in the 1960's, and later became an enthusiastic skier who enjoyed spending time with his family at the cabin he built at Big Bear Lake. Fred's skills as a master builder and craftsman were unparalleled, and he made his own custom canoes, bows and arrows, martial arts weaponry and table tennis paddles. He wa s a music lover and talented guitarist, an avid reader and was seldom without a crossword puzzle nearby. A loyal friend and dedicated family man, his main priority was spending time with the people he loved. He made many trips to Central Oregon and the Oregon coast to visit his daughter Jeri and her family, and spent much time with his son Rick and his family in Garden Grove. Fred is survived by his loving family: wife, Katie; daughter, Jeri and son-in-law, Dan Fouts and their children Ryan and Shannon; so n, Rick and daughter-in-law, Jodi Martin and their children Kyle, Daniel and Travis; and brother, Jerry and sister-in-law, Cristi Martin and their children Jenny and Mark. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4 at Forest Lawn Cypress in the Church of Our Fathers, followed by a gathering where we will celebrate his life. The family suggests casual attire. Dear uncle Fred
It has been long time since I have written in your guest book but you have always been on my mind and I often mention you to my friends in England.
It is a shame that long beach can’t hold your memorial tournament but maybe next year they will hold it.
I myself have been in England since 2016 taking care of my parents, dad passed away last year and incidentally he was 4 days younger than you.
I will always miss and love you.

Dear Fred,

Thirteen year of loving memories have gone by but your spirit is high in the sky.
We are looking forward for the next year gathering that you will be always proud of.
We remembered you playing table tennis with such a great spirit and sportsmanship.
Your great big family always supports your favorite table tennis sport and we all love it, too.

We love you and miss you always, Fred.

Hi Fred,
I can't believe that it's been 13 years since you left us. We have gathered every year to play
your favorite sport, and all friends of yours met and talked about the good memories we had
with you. Unfortunately, we are not able to do it this year due to the pandemic. However,
that doesn't mean that we are not thinking of you. You will always be missed. I look forward
to bringing friends together to celebrate your 14th Anniversary. I can see your smile.

Dear Dad - it is hard to imagine that you left us thirteen years ago because you are still such a part of our lives...you are in our hearts and our spirits always and we think of you all the time with stories, memories and smiles. You were truly an original - so strong, so courageous, so creative, so talented, so accomplished, so FEARLESS...so Fred. We will raise a glass to you tonight and celebrate you to the moon and back with love and gratitude.

Uncle Stan said I had more photo with you than everyone else and that made me real happy becuase I felt real close to you.
I miss you so much uncle although Stan is real good uncle and I love him a lot but you really were more special.

Happy Father's Day, Dad!

Today I celebrate you and I miss you and I want to tell you how much I love you...you are still and always will be a constant presence in my life and that of Dan, Ryan and Shannon. We talk about you, we think about you, we reflect on so many good times shared. We smile when we see the signs that continue to affirm that your spirit is close by, like the new "Fred" real estate sign we drive by most every day now. Who names their real estate company...Fred? We enjoy every moment on this earth with people we love, because losing you made us truly understand the meaning of that simple lesson. Thank you for your guidance, your strength, your wisdom, your protection, your loyalty, your humor and your unique Fred-ness. We are taking good care of Mom and she is surrounded by love, laughter and dear friends. We are with her in her fight for her health and she remains positive and courageous and joyful, even though she misses you and all you shared. She sees you, too, Dad. You pop up in the living room, emptying the trash, when she closes her eyes. I'm glad you are there to comfort her. We are also taking good care of Uncle Stu - he has become a precious person in all of our lives and we have learned so much on this journey with him.

On this Father's Day, I feel so lucky to be able to call you my Dad.
I love you with all my heart.
Jeri
PS - How is sweet Riley??? Throw him a tennis ball for us and tell him we love him, will you?!

Fredster,

What's up?!

Ok - Ok... I know you're not big on getting computer messages, but it seemed like a fun break from all the virtual/telepathic/spiritual communications we've been having lately!

I know you're having fun up there, but I still want to know everything about the table tennis situation... [How often, who, gossip, etc]

I also want to know about our other favorite subject - science fiction! Do you have science up there? Do you even have any fiction up there?

That's it for today. You've already heard everything else I have to say.

Talk (communicate) to me!

Hello Fred,
I can't believe it's been a year since you left. We all miss you. You should be happy to see that we are still doing what you wanted us to do.
I know that we will be doing that for a long long time because of your spiritual support.

Merry Christmas, Dad!

It's our first Christmas without you, and all of us miss you so much. We thought of you last night at our Christmas Eve dinner enjoying a meal that was one of your favorites, steak and crab - that always brought a smile to your face! This morning, after we'd opened gifts, Dan looked out the window and saw two very large, beautiful wild turkeys in the snow right behind the house - in my 14 years in Oregon, I've never seen turkeys here, so this visit definitely got my attention. Mom later told me about how you once hunted wild turkeys with your bow and arrows and that they were the best you'd ever tasted! We decided to let these two enjoy their Christmas undisturbed. Dad, we think about you every day and you are always in our hearts. We are thankful for the years we had together and the wonderful times we shared as a family. You are so loved.

Hey Fred my friend! Ahhhh what a glorious life you led and how blessed we were to be part of it! You will be, and already are so missed but we also know that you are with us in spirit daily and we've found great joy in receiving your messages. Jeri and I have talked many times about the unique and serendipitous things that have occurred and can only be connected with you. Actually, it provides great comfort in knowing you are still with us, watching over and caring for those you loved in your own extraordinary ways. What a wonderful life to be so loved and adored, and we all know why .... because you're you, one in a million and one who truly made a positive difference in this world and the lives of others. Love you Freddie .... keep in touch! :)

Dear Freddie: My constant childhood companion when we visited Grandmother Lu's house on 9th street. What fun to always have you there waiting to go to the beach, or ride ponies at the Pike or just play cars in the sand. And oh those 4th of July picnics with all the Galbreath family, and our other cousins, Ray, Eldon, and Clifford. Darling Clifford who was killed in China in WWII. Well, everyone is gone now except Betty and me. I rarely saw you after we grew up, but I always had a special place in my heart and life for you. Love, Cousin Jean

Hi Grandpa,
I wish you were here and I miss you so much. I want you to know that you are the best Grandpa ever. Thank you for taking me to the knife show and taking me to Los Cab all the time, and coming to my baseball games to watch me play catcher. I miss the times when we would be in the jacuzzi looking at the stars, but now I look up in the sky and see you, the bright star looking at me. Grandma misses you alot, I am taking good care of her.

I love you so much

Hi Dad-I can't even begin to tell you how much you are missed by all of us. You have always brought so much joy, laughter, and wisdom to our family.

Although you were "technically" my Father-In-Law, I never saw it that way. I have called you "Dad" from the time we met 10 years ago, and to this day you are still my Dad.

We have spent so much time together over the years, whether it be during the holidays, birthdays, to the kids sporting events (which you never missed) and just hanging out and going to dinner. I miss those times, yet I cherish and hold onto those memories. Remember when I introduced you to the "Presideante" margarita at Chili's...Good Times !!

You have always been there for us and for your grandkids, no matter what, your family was a big part of your life.

I know you will continue to watch over us and give us the signs that you are still here with us, and we will continue to look up at you, "Our bright-shinny star" everynight.

P.S. I know you saw that I only had 1 marble left when I played the solitaire marble game....Beat Ya ;)

I will love you always and forever,

Jodi

This is the Fred I knew.

He is a good guy that you can trust.
He is a good family man who is proud of them.
He is one of the many strong quiet men who makes good things happen, and we aren't even aware of it.
Like one of the pixels of your screen, you saw the whole picture but you don't see each one.
I wish we had more Fred out there instead of "We don't make them any more".

I met Fred around 1961 when I was 13yrs old at the Table Tennis Center in Hollywood, CA. He was man who was always nice to me and to my dad. He was a gentlemen of this sport, and looked at it in a positive way by just having fun with it. He was always ready and willing to practice with me, and help me to become a better player. I stopped playing around 1965 and came back in 2004, and there was Fred smiling and making me feel welcome once again as he did when I was a kid. You've been a positive in my life Fred, and I am proud and privileged to have known you. Thanks for everything :-)

Fred,

I only knew you for a short time, but I will always remember you as one of the nicest people I've met through table tennis. You were always so friendly and encouraging. I'll never forget when you and Doug stayed late in San Diego to help me win my first event. Rest in peace.

Fred,

You and Katie have always been a part of my life thru my Mom, Bev Hess. Looking back (I was in junior high) one memory of you sticks in my mind, I had gone to the cabin with my Mom, Katie and you for the weekend and I wanted to open a jar of peanut butter and I used the breakfast bar top to tap the jar on, I still remember just how high I jumped because you startled me telling me "DO NOT DO THAT" sorry to this day I never tap jars on counter tops.

You are truly missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know you.

Dear Fred,

Everyone at the Long Beach Table Tennis Club says Hi. You were such a great spirit of the Club. Your presence will be sorely missed. You were by far our senior member in terms of service and knowledge of the sport. We appreciate all the time you spent with the many new players who benefited from your knowledge and experience. On behalf of the club, we would like to thank you for all the contributions that you have made to the club and the sport. You will always be in our thoughts and hearts.

Other memories from the members of the club:

Fred was the one we always went to when we needed a fresh look at a problem, an intelligent opinion or just something as simple as what kind of rubber we should use on our paddle.

Fred was a steadying influence for younger members and an inspiration for the older members.

As we arrive at the parking lot at Jefferson Academy, we will still be looking for Fred's van parked in its usual spot. It will never be there again but many of us will think we see it.

Fred won't be sitting in his usual spot in the bleachers anymore waiting for his chance to play but many of us will visualize him there and know that he will always be there for us.

After reflecting on how best to describe Fred, there is one phrase that most aptly applies: "Renaissance Man." Those who knew Fred were continually surprised at the breadth of his interests, from table tennis to crosswords and just about everything in between. However, best of all to Bev and me, was what a great friend he was for years, and we are thankful that Katie continues to be. Thanks for all the wonderful times with you, and all our love. I have met with Fred off and on in the mid 1990's. For most part it was at the Senior tournament at Laguna Hills. I got to know Fred a lot more when I bought one of his table tennis clamps. Over the years I have purchased more than 10 clamps which I have given to other table tennis afficionados like myself.

These last few years, I would see Fred on saturdays at the Long Beach TT League. My two kids, Marielle and Ethan also got to know him. Fred was a kind and a gentle person, always encouraging. Once, he saw my son accidentally hit the table with his blade. He told me not to worry and he would fix the blade.

Marielle and Ethan were shocked when I told them about your passing away. We will miss you and your ever presence on saturdays at the Long Beach club. Rest in peace our dear friend. I will have my blade ready when we meet again.
