DWIGHT WATKINS Obituary

Dwight E. Watkins, 74 years of age, passed away in UH Hospital of Ohio following a late discovery of mass spread cancer. Dwight was born Feb. 21, 1950, to Daniel Liddell Watkins and Thelma Blevins Watkins, in Gassville.

Dwight enlisted in the army in 1967, and served his country honorably. Then, through much of his adult life, he worked as a contractor, pastor, or truck driver. Dwight performed many jobs over the years, never meeting a challenge that he couldn't find a way to overcome. His hobbies included riding horses, watching Razorback football with his family, hunting, or rubbing his dog's ears. He enjoyed a passionate discussion of politics, had a fierce love for his country and those who served, and never failed to help a friend in need. He loved spending time with family, and when he could, he loved to write songs, sing and play his guitar. He had a knack for captivating listeners with tales of his upbringing and the many adventures that filled his life, often leaving them in awe or laughing so hard they could barely breathe. Dwight never forgot his humble beginnings, was always generous and made sure he treated everyone, regardless of life status, with respect.

He is preceded in death by his Grandmother Bertie Watkins, his parents; his three brothers, Bill Watkins, Jerry Watkins, and Dwayne Watkins; his sister, Bonnie Stovall; and his nephew, Eric Watkins. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joyce of Cave City, his daughter Wendy Howard (Brad) of Cave City, his daughter Nikki Penn (Billy) of Cave City, his daughter Sheena Bullock of Farmington, MO (Zeke), and his son Tony Buck of Searcy; 14 siblings, Bobby Joe Watkins, Johnny Watkins, Ellis Don Watkins, Patty Ann Haven Mangus, Carla Stovall Wallace, Indy Stovall Eikelberry, Allen Watkins, Byron Watkins, Treva Watkins Gibbs, Veada Watkins Metcalf, Shelton Watkins, Roger Watkins, and Glen Dale Watkins; four grandchildren, Joseph Howard, Micah Davis, Jaxon Davis, Audrey Davis; four great grandchildren, Caleb Howard, Nathan Howard, Natalie Howard , and Bella Anorve; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dwight chose to be cremated, and the family has decided to forego a formal funeral service. However, there will be a celebration of life Oct. 17 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Next Door event venue, 207 S. Main Street, Cave City. Some of his favorite foods will be served. Please bring your favorite picture of Dwight or a good memory to share.

Dwight was a true friend for many years. I have nothing but good memories of him! We spoke about two weeks before he died and we got to visit over the phone for a while. The conversation wandered into some of the events of the past year or so and his words to us were to the effect that some people think as they do about his life and some of the negative things they may have heard. He was supremely confident that he was right with the Lord. And I believe I will be seeing Dwight again.
