To often the pace of life with it's to do lists, work, school and so on cloud the value and sanctity of just being able to wake up in the morning and tackle the day. For me I have only to look at my wrist to find that daily reminder engraved on a metal bracelet to cherish the moment. 6 years have passed since the last time I saw Mike; it often scares me how often I lose sight of all that I have and what he has lost.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.

Monday 4/29/2008 will be the one year anniversary of the homecoming for Michael Hullender.
I visited his grave today at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens in Buford, GA to find a most peaceful place directly under the flag pole bearing our stars and stripes. There is a very nice marble bench on which I sat and reflected on the sacrifice this person unknown to me in life gave for his country.
I thought about his family and fiance and prayed for their comfort. Please keep this hero in your thoughts and prayer and let's be thankful for the time which our Lord shared him with us.

JIMCATHIE VICKARYOUS
September 4, 2007
Our son, Maj Brian Vickaryous, surgeon, helped train Michael at the famous trauma center at the Univ of Miami. Brian is home safely now from Mosul, Iraq. While there he wrote a blog. On Memorial day he made this entry about Michael:
In Memorium, SGT Michael R. Hullender, Army Medic, Ranger, Killed in Action 28 April 2007, Iskandariyah, Iraq by an improvised explosive device.
I'm beginning this page much different from any of my last. Tonight I saw on CNN's honoring of The Fallen, SGT Hullender. I and my unit knew this great American and I was upset to see his demise. Michael trained with us one year ago almost to the day at the Ryder Trauma Center at my alma mater, the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. The first time I met my unit I went through every soldier and introduced myself, the last was Mike who let me know with a chewing tobacco in the lip grin that he was not in my unit, but was there to learn as much as he could to make himself a better medic. He had traveled almost as far as my unit, coming from Ft. Richardson, Alaska.
With tattooed arms, a stalky build, and an easy way about him, he might as well have been one of the team. For all purposes those two weeks he was. He mentored junior soldiers, had an unassuming and always ready to help demeanor, and could hold his own talking politics or trash with officer and enlisted alike. I really liked the guy and wished he was part of my team. Before I arrived, he was doing some training in Hawaii and he looked up my team. They have been telling stories about their night out together almost better than any of the retold tales Vickaryous boys still conjure up in a newly distorted fashion. He and my unit have been keeping in touch, I heard his name as recently as last month when some of my soldiers told me he was in Iraq.
So when I heard the Fallen being announced at the end of the CNN segment I turned around to pay my respects before I left my room. The first person on the screen was this face that I recognized and my heart fell. I looked at his name, heard it spoken and could not believe what I had heard. Everyday America loses great men and women. They may not drive the fanciest cars, eat at the swankest restaurants, or live in the best neighborhoods, but I know that I am honored to stand beside them and do anything that I can do to help them get home. Mike was one of those people that stands out.
What I saw in Mike at the Ryder Trauma Center a year ago he is exactly what you read in his Atlanta-Journal Constitution article and see in this picture. A big bulge under his lip, a smile that water would run right off of, and a dedication to saving his fellow man. I am honored to have met this Ranger who just showed up with people he did not know because he took it upon himself to make himself better at doing his job, saving his fellow soldier. I would have expected nothing less than what you read. That he was running to the perilous scene where two of his soldiers had been hit, putting himself in harms way to save others. On his way he was killed by a bomb set up as a booby trap. The only regret that I had watching his face on the screen is that we could not run in and save him.
Take a moment today and say a prayer for our fallen, both todays and those of the last 231 years. Many of them have never had their story told, but deserve more than just a little of our time.
Enjoy your Memorial Day and God Bless you Mike, I am sure you are still running toward the gunfire. Major Brian Vickaryous, Mousl

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Mike (Mikey Smash) was a great friend to myself and my family while we were stationed at Ft Benning. He will be missed and remembered forever. An incredible man, soldier, medic, and above all else friend.
