Alan Ingham Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

INGHAM, Alan Geoffrey Age 58, of Oxford, passed away Thursday, April 14. Born in Manchester, England, Alan and his wife, Christine came to the United States in 1968 and moved to Oxford in 1984. He received his Bachelor's Degree from University of Leeds (England), his master's from Washington State University, and his Ph.D. (Sociology) from the University of Massachusetts. His professional career included terms at the University of Washington and the Universities of Waterloo and Guelph (Canada). Beginning in 1984, he served as a Professor in the Department of Physical Education, Health, and Sports Studies at Miami University. He loved to teach, and he emphasized social justice ideals in his teaching, research, and service. Amid his academic acclaim, his students, past and present, remained his top academic priority. He enjoyed an international reputation for his scholarship and was invited frequently as a keynote speaker and academic consultant all over the world. He was an enthusiastic soccer advocate throughout this life; his engagement in this sport included achievements as an elite athlete, a coach of elite athletes, and as a passionate fan. He was an avid reader of scholarly literature, novels, and popular literature. He loved good food, spirited conversations with friends, family, and colleagues, and his special cars. These and his other favorite pursuits reflected his passion for life. He is survived by his wife, J. Christine Bloor Ingham, his son Anthony Graeme Bloor Ingham, and his many good friends comprising his second family. A memorial service will be held at Kumler Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 22. The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to the McCullough-Hyde Auxiliary Scholarship Fund. Smith & Ogle Funeral Home is serving the family.

Dr. Ingham was great friend, advisor and teacher. He was the first person I met when I started graduate school. He made me feel welcome and always had time to share a story. I will miss those days and carry his memory with me always.

Alan was a great man with a kind heart and joyful smile. I remember he sat down to comfort me on one occasion. As tears ran down my cheeks, he chased them away with hugs and kind words. His memory will live on in the hearts and lives of those that Alan touched. I believe that Alan is responsible for changing many peoples lives and redirecting their personal paths. Alan will be deeply missed. Our prayers go out to Christine and Tony.

I had Dr Ingham for classes in PHS for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. His enthusiasm was contagious and he always challenged me to "think outside the box"

When I was Alan's Graduate Program Secretary his phone number was on my speed dial. That was before e-mail, cell phones and all of the technology available now. He was hard to keep track of but I usually found him. Before everyone had their own computers he kept us all busy. He was a very prolific writer.

AS Coordinator of International Admissions in the Graduate School at Miami, I worked with Alan on many occasions. And it was always a pleasure. He was great fun, yet he made sure his students got the attention and answers they needed. Alan always had a smile and a story to tell. I will miss him. God's Blessings to Chris and the family. Lynn

Alan was a wonderful friend to me. He gave me encouragement and understanding. We enjoyed talking about our families, including our dogs. He always lifted me up and gave me a good thought to remember when he left. I will always keep his memory and laughter in my heart. Sincerely,
