Robert FLAGEL Obituary
News Death Notice
FLAGEL, Dr. Robert Passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 15, 2015, at the age of 75. Dr. Flagel was a life-long resident of Middletown, practicing optometry in town for 50 years. Dr. Flagel is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Sharon, and his 4 children and 11 grandchildren - his pride and joy: Laurie (Greg Cameron) Flagel and children Colin, Jake, and Braden, Cincinnati, Ohio; Todd (Jamie) Flagel and children Evan, Daniel, and Sam, Cincinnati, Ohio; Eric (Dena) Flagel and children Alexandra, Adam, and Kate, Chicago, Illinois; and Shelly (Jonathan Morrow) Flagel and children Elijah and Gabriel, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is also survived by his sister Joyce (Steve) Kiourtsis of Columbus, Ohio, and preceded in death by his mother, Judith Freeman Flagel and father, Louis Flagel. Dr. Flagel graduated from Middletown High School in 1957 and The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 1963. For decades, Dr. Flagel proudly served the Middletown community in a variety of roles, including President of the Middletown Community Foundation, President of the Noon Optimist Club, President of Temple Beth Sholom, Chairman of All American Weekend, and committee member of the Pigskin Roundball Spectacular. In recent years Bob enjoyed daily walks at Smith Park with his wife, Sharon, and dog, Wriglee, which replaced his 30-year routine of running after work. His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed for his sense of humor, generosity, and positive spirit. Funeral Service will be held Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Wilson-Schramm- Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown with Rabbi Haviva Horvitz officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Temple Beth Sholom, 610 Gladys Dr., Middletown, Ohio 45044 - OR - the Middletown Community Foundation, 300 N. I just found out today. Oh my, I am really feeling so sad. He was more than my eye doctor, he was a friend!!! I think it took him longer to do my eye exam than most, because we sat & joked & laughed so much. I will surely miss him. God Bless the family.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Flagel. Dr. Flagel cared for my father and mother's eye problems for many years and they trusted him without reservation. He truly cared for their problems and was a pleasure to be with and talk to. We will keep him in our prayers.

What a loss for the entire community. Praying god will comfort the family. My daughter had real bad eyes and our insurance company paid so .much and he helped. Us through one of those times. His angel wings will be extra special.

Dr. Flagel was a joy to work with. Every time I'd visit his office, I'd make a special stop to grab him kitkats and a big handful of pens. Chatting with him was a treat. His waiting-room was always full of patients filled with praise and compliments for Dr.Flagel. He will be greatly missed by the CEI team.

I am so sad to read this. Dr. Flagel was an awesome man. I worked for him for a few years and he really made a difference in our life. I've never forgotten him. I used to love seeing him running down Breiel Blvd. We are praying for you Sharon and all of the family. He was an amazing man.
