Frank Fagundes Obituary

Frank E. Fagundes, a dedicated teacher and world traveler, passed away in the early morning of Friday, December 7, 2012, at the age of 69.
Frank (also known as Frankie to family) was born at home in the Lemoore area. He grew up in the communities of both Riverdale and Lemoore. Frank attended local schools, including San Jose School (the grammar school prior to Island School), Lemoore High School, West Hills College and Fresno State College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Following graduation from college, he started teaching at Riverdale Elementary School where he taught for 39 years before retiring in June of 2006. He was a very dedicated teacher and always went the extra mile for his students. It was not uncommon for him to also help those students who missed school due to illness or those who needed help grasping certain subjects by visiting their homes and meeting their parents.
Many of his past students fondly remember him as a teacher who made his subjects, especially science, interesting because of his hands-on approach. Frank would go beyond just reading out of the book. He conducted some very interesting experiments over the years, which captured his students' attention and helped them grasp the subject at hand.
During each year, Frank would also start planning his next exotic trip for his upcoming summer vacation. His trips would generally start one week after the school year ended and last until about a week before school started again in the fall. During his 40+ years of travel, he visited almost every continent and approximately 150 countries around the globe. He especially enjoyed visiting parts of Africa, China and the U.S.S.R. His travels over the years are documented on both slides and video. Frank also collected many unusual and unique souvenirs from his trips over his lifetime.
Frank is survived by his father, Frank A. Fagundes of Lemoore, sister Gerry Dooley and husband Dennis of Angels Camp, brother Joe Fagundes and wife Dodie of Morro Bay, and youngest brother Raymond Fagundes of Lemoore; nieces Denise Bailey (and husband John) of San Andreas, Tanya Ehlert (and husband Greg) of Greeley, Colorado, and Julie Fagundes of Huntington Beach; great-nephew Anthony Bailey, great-niece Elyse Bailey, great-nephew Peter Bailey, all of San Andreas, and great-nephews Nathan, Jacob and Timothy Ehlert of Greeley, Colorado. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins. Frank was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Fagundes.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Phipps-Dale Funeral Chapel. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lemoore at 9:30 a.m., followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 13th. Graveside services will be held at the Lemoore Cemetery following mass. Remembrances may be made to the St. Peter's Church Building Fund, 870 N. Lemoore Avenue, Lemoore, CA 93245.

Sorry I missed Frank's notice. Wanted to say that while our 4 kids attended Riverdale Elementary and I served on the board ther, Frank was always admired and valued for his 100% dedication...to teaching kids! While eccentric...it was that quality that magnified his zeal to teach...and expose his students to the World. Sharing personal experiences and relating how they applied to his...and potentially their lives...was his passion. To illustrate his complete dedication, our Superintendent related an incident that required his intervention and discussion with Frank. It seems one morning Frank came into the District office @ 7:30...appearing quite disheveled...and with Cherrios stuck in his beard. When asked why, he related that he'd lost track of time doing prep for the next day's science experiments...and didn't have time to go home, having spent the entire night going about his classroom work! It seemed he had taken the time to enjoy a bowl of cereal at his desk...hence the tell-tale signs of his sleepless night. Wile somewhat numerous, it none-the-less spoke volumes of his complete commitment to his kids...and imparting knowledge n others. We will miss Frank's enthusiasm...but I'd venture to say, no one who survived his classes and probing questions will ever forget him, nor fail to achieve greater enjoyment of their surroundings...as a result of his boundless curiosity...and teachings.

Thank You, Mr. Fagundes...on behalf of all parents of students you influenced during your dedicated years @ Riverdale schools!

Good bye Mr Fagundes. You were an amazing teacher. I know you didn't get the credit you deserved back then and kids could be so mean. You definitely left an ever lasting impression in my head. So many memories... Any time I think about analogies or hypothesis you are the first person that comes to mind. Thank you for going above and beyond not caring about the slack you'd catch from kids or other teachers. You are the one that made the difference in so many of our lives. I will be forever grateful.

Mr. Fagundes was easily one of the BEST teachers I've ever had the honor of learning from. His patience was immeasurable (especially with us, discipline cases). He could and would answer any question we could come up with, and we would test him all the time: "why do we get hiccups? Why do you sneeze? Why is my hair brown?" we thought we could drive him crazy-- but no such luck, his good humored nature prevented it. He exemplified what a true teacher should aspire to be; and now, his love for adventure and travels take him to a new place.. may his soul rest in peace in the next life, for he will fondly live in our hearts and our memories... May our Good Lord bless his loved ones during this sorrowful time..

This man is the reason I love science. He was a teacher who went the extra mile for his students and also pushed them. He was always fair because he wanted each and everyone of us to suceed in life. When my daughter was born in 1995 I was a junior and he came to meet her one day after school and that alone left me with a memory of him I will keep with me forever. Thank you for your years of dedication to your students educations and their futures you were an inspiration to me.

Who could ever forget Mr. Fagundes? Fourth grade in 1978-79 was memorable because of him. We traveled to China with Marco Polo to meet Kublai Khan, attended Prince Prospero's masquerade ball in Edgar Allan Poe's "Masque of the Red Death," and saw the effects of smoking on the cotton lungs of a homemade smoking machine, that I think he named Smoking Charlie. He shared stories of his world travels and made ordinary things, like grapefruit and cinnamon sticks, an adventure. It has been years since I have seen Mr. Fagundes, but whenever I think of him, I smile. He was an energetic, dedicated, one-of-a-kind teacher who always went above and beyond for his students. He will be missed.

Mr. Fagundes has been one of my favorite teachers when I was in Elementry school he taught us all a lot about science and made it fun. He is consider Mr. Fagundes the Science guy went above and beyond to help students learn. His static ball going around with it as his hair stood up and beard from the ball. He was funnier and made science more interesting then I think Bill Nye. No one would sleep in his class and if you looked like you where watch out for the dry erasers. He shared so many stories and memories with us. He will never be forgot will always be a part of our lives. I thank him for being such a great teacher and sharing his passion for science with us. I went to his class not interested in the subject and left wanting to learn more. I know have teach my children some of his expirements and I have been blessed with great teachers like MR. Fagundes. My friends and I thought he would out live us all with his high energy and doing cart wheels in the courtyard. You will always be remembered and in our hearts. WE are so sorry for your loss may he rest in peace as he is home with Our Lord. May God bless you and your family during this time.
