LONNIE MAIR Obituary

LONNIE LAMONT MAIR

November, 1944 – April, 2025

Lonnie Lamont Mair was born during November 1944 in Clinton, Missouri to Lora Harriet Mair and Lamont Raymond Mair. Lonnie met the love of his life Carol in Iowa where they both attended Graceland College. Lonnie and Carol married in December 1966.

Lonnie served in the Navy for four years during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Lemoore, California. After leaving the service, Lonnie finished his college degree and received his teaching credential. He taught at Hanford High School, West Campus where he contributed greatly to the education of many where before retiring, he earned the designation of Teacher of the Year.

Lonnie and Carol lived in Lemoore for 46 years before relocating to Arizona in retirement. Lonnie spent many a late-night writing and eventually fulfilled his dream of becoming an author. He wrote the five-book Stephanie's Stepside series, three of which were published at the time of his death, as well as an unpublished book of poetry inspired by the Arizona landscape. In addition to his writing after retirement, he became an ordained minister in the Community of Christ church.

Lonnie was called home on April 19, 2025 after many years of health complications that he never let deter him from pursuing his dreams or from passionately demonstrating his care and love for his wife. Lonnie passed peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife Carol of 58 years, their daughter Tiffany Mair Panzarella, and his two brothers, Kerry and Gale Mair. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Lemoore Cemetery, 1441 N Lemoore Avenue, at noon. A memorial service will be held later this year at Community of Christ Church in Glendale, Arizona.

Mr. Mair was my first high school English teacher. I can still remember his opening statements about how our names would be placed on each assignment and his passion for English and poetry. He was a true asset to the the students at Hanford High. My condolences to his wife and family.
Sincerely, Lora (Azevedo) Daniels, HUHS Class of 1987

My condolences to Lonnie's family. I worked with Lonnie at Hanford High School for over 20 years. He made me a better teacher and was one of the very first colleagues to not only welcome me but also to mentor me. He would meet with me to discuss lessons and to offer suggestions and advice. I am quite sure he helped me secure a teaching position with the district as he would ask for me to sub his classes and was instrumental in getting me a job with the district! I have such deep respect for his professionalism, his intellect and his kindness. He made people's lives better, and I am so very thankful that I knew him.
