Anthony Owen Stedman

1964 - 2021

Anthony Owen Stedman (Tony) died peacefully on April 7, 2021 following a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born in Hartford, CT on June 17, 1964 to Wendy (Williams) Stedman Sheard and Arthur Keeney Stedman. A West Hartford native, Tony attended Renbrook School and Hotchkiss, graduating from Brown University in 1986. At Brown, Tony was a member of the Bruins lacrosse team that, in 1985, won the Ivy League Championship, ultimately participating in the NCAA Division I finals. Tony was many things to many people: son, father, brother, coworker, classmate, teammate, AA member and sponsor. As a young boy, he and his father spent countless hours at the ice rink or in the backyard (or in the house) throwing a football or lacrosse ball, as well as many hours clamming and fishing in Cape Cod bay off of Truro, Massachusetts. Tony and his son Jake also shared a love of Truro, swimming and soaking up the sun at their favorite spot, Longnook Beach, or enjoying seafood meals at The Beachcomber. He and his older sister, Amanda, played many games of (very competitive) Scrabble. Childhood weekends spent with his mother in Stony Creek, CT were filled with fishing, swimming, bike rides and walks in the woods. Exceedingly grateful for his eleven years of sobriety, he was devoted to The Program, his AA friends and to helping others, attending and leading many meetings in the Greater Harford area. Tony was a Major Accounts Manager at United Training. The support shown to him by his colleagues over the last year and a half was very much appreciated by him and his family. Special thanks also go to Dr. Joel Silver and the staff at Regional Cancer Care Associates in West Hartford, as well as the many Doctors and Nurses at St. Francis Hospital. Tony is survived by his father and stepmother, Betty Allison, of Old Saybrook, CT; his son, Jacob, of West Hartford, his sister, Amanda Bourque (Bill), of Andover, VT and nieces, Julia, Maddie and Katie Bourque. He was predeceased by his mother, Wendy, and stepfather, Michael H. Sheard. A Celebration of Life will be held this summer.
