Audrey M. Casstevens

1933 - 2022

Audrey Marguerite (Smith) Casstevens, 88, formally of Granby, died on Monday, October 3, 2022, in Winchester, MA. Audrey was born on October 11, 1933, in Bridgeport, CT, daughter of the late Clifford and Marguerite "Peg" (Nichols) Smith. She and her family moved to Plymouth, NH in 1938, returning to Bridgeport seven years later. After graduating from Central High School in 1951, Audrey attended the University of Bridgeport, School of Nursing, and worked at Bridgeport Hospital from 1955-1957. She then enrolled at Hartford Seminary, now Hartford International University for Religion and Peace. In 1960, through a joint-degree program, she received a dual Masters Degree in Theology and Social Work from the University of Connecticut. Upon graduation, Audrey worked in Hartford as a Protective Social Worker, for Child and Family Services until 1965 returning to the work force again in, 1987, as the Town of Granby Children's Librarian, where she stayed until her retirement in 2000. Over her years in Granby, Audrey actively volunteered, guiding Nature Trails, as the Circulation Editor for the Granby Drummer, and as Treasurer for the Granby Community Fund. As the supportive and beloved wife of the late Rev. Robert C. Casstevens, she also gave a tremendous amount to various Church communities. She was a loving mother to daughter, Jennifer Casstevens-Lopez and her spouse Carlos of Waltham, MA, and son, Steven Casstevens and his spouse Sandra of Temple, PA. She was the proud grandmother of Tessa Casstevens Lopez and Stephanie Casstevens. She also leaves behind her nephew, Rikki Smith and his wife Janelle of Trumbull, CT and their daughter Karli. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Kendrick Smith. Audrey was an extraordinary person who quietly touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family will receive friends on Monday, October 10, 10-11 a.m., followed by a Celebration of life at 11 a.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby with the Rev. Cindy Maybeck officiating. Burial will follow in Granby Cemetery.
