Charles Darling Obituary

DARLING, Charles Wallis Charles Wallis Darling, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully at his Connecticut home in the early hours of Wednesday, February 15th, following a courageous struggle with brain cancer. Dr. Darling had recently retired after a 35-year career at Capitol Community College. In his long and devoted tenure at Capitol he served as public relations liaison, professor of literature and creative writing, Webmaster, and creator and developer of the highly esteemed Internet Guide to Grammar and Writing. Last year he culminated over three decades of writing with the publication of The Saints of Diminished Capacity, a collected volume of poetry expressing all of the wit, tenderness, and artful exuberance with which he lived his life, even to its final moments. Charles is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marylynn; his sons, John and Jeff; daughters-in-law, Mary and Micki, and much adored grandsons Jayden and Tyler. A memorial will be held for Dr. Darling at Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut, beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, the 26th of February. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Capital Community College Foundation, c/o J. McNamara, 950 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103. The College is establishing a fund in memory of Dr. Darling. "beyond the singing of it, beyond the age and count of stars"--Charles Wallis Darling

I learned of Dr. Darling while teaching English in Japan. The information he shared generously, the incisive observations, the wit underlying some of his comments, was not lost on me, and I endeavoured to pass on the same love of writing I caught from him to my students and my own children. I truly wish I had lived nearby and become one of many in his incredible community of scholars and learners. May his legacy continue live and thrive.

Mrs. Darling,

I was very sad to hear of your husband's passing. I have very fond memories of the two of you walking around the block in our neighborhood (until a couple of years ago, my kids and I lived at the corner of Anthony Rd/Sherry Circle). It was always nice to see your smiling faces coming around the corner. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To The Darling Family:

I am so sorry about your loss. My name is Antoinette Jenkins and I was one of his student when I was at Greater Hartford Community College in 1990. He was a wonderful english teacher. I remeber when I lost my baby brother on November 17, 1990 he was there for me and my family. He brought me a Thanksgiving Basket that year and it made me feel so much better. If you need to e-mail me back my e-mail address is [email protected] or you can call at 206-1160 and May God Bless You and Keep You in his loving arm.

Please know that I have only just discovered Dr. Darling's amazing website. What an apt name! Yet the day I discovered him, I was at the same time notified of his recent passing. His work is fabulous and will remain valuable to countless students and teachers around the world. Dr. Darling's work lives on to serve the public for years to come. I am deeply saddened by the loss of such a wonderful soul, yet I know he'll always be there for you and for me, just in a different form. My heartfelt sympathies to all.

Marylynn, friends in Connecticut mailed Charlie's obituary to me. It arrived today. I am so filled with

sadness for your loss...but know with such joy you were able to share his incredible and wantonly wonderful life with him. His friendship and support when we worked at GHCC remain a benchmark in my career. I bought his book through the bookstore several months ago. When I read "Minnow" I had a sense of foreboding. I only wish I had told him how much I treasure the book, my memories of him, and the years we worked together. My thoughts are with you.

I am saddened by the passing of Charlie. He was one of the people at Capital who made working there more pleasant. I found him to be a very sincere, honest and extremely caring individual. My personal memory of him will be how his kind and giving heart was commeasurate with his physical stature and his deep resonant voice. He surely will be missed but definitely not forgotten.
