Charles Skoog Obituary

SKOOG, Charles "Chuck" Charles "Chuck" Skoog, 68, resident of Andover Lake since 1946, passed away on March 27, 2007. He was born on July 25, 1938, son of the late Henry and Muriel Skoog. Muriel, his caregiver, passed away 20 days prior to Chuck. For a short period prior to his death, Chuck was a resident of Marlborough Health Care. As a young boy, Chuck could be found either sailing the Flying Dutchman, or hunting and trapping around the Lake. In 1955, at age 16, tragedy struck when he dove into Andover Lake and broke his neck. This accident confined him to a wheelchair. Chuck never looked back, and with his perseverance and outstanding attitude made a life for himself as a quadriplegic. He found a love of music. His career began at the Red Barn Dances on Friday nights as a DJ. It soon developed into a 35-year livelihood. He became known as "The Grandfather of Mobile Music." After retiring in 1992, he returned to his childhood passion for the water. Chuck and his nephew Jim could be found building and sailing remote-controlled sailboats around the Lake. He also loved sitting at the dock and watching the ducks and geese with their little ones. Chuck leaves behind his Aunt Astrid Wierzbicki of Manchester; a close cousin, Clifford Skoog of Bolton; two brothers: Bill Skoog and his wife Pam of Columbia; Peter Skoog and his wife Elinor of Andover; and a sister, Astrid Belanger and her husband Bob of Columbia; five nieces and nephews: Jessica, Travis, and Sara Skoog; Jim and Jamie Belanger; and a long-time family friend, Kevin Hoxie of Willimantic. Chuck's humor and love for life will forever be an inspiration to all who knew him. The sound of music on Andover Lake has been silenced with the passing of Chuck Skoog, but his memory will live on. He is forever in our hearts. There will be an open house for Muriel and Chuck at their home, 278 Lake Road in Andover, on Sunday, April 1 from 1-4 p.m. Friends and family are invited to share their memories with one another. There will be no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. The family asks that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made to the Andover Fire Department, 11 School Road, Andover, CT 06232 of which Chuck was a honorary lifelong member. The Holmes Funeral Home in Manchester is in charge of the arrangements. To sign the online guest book please go to www.courant.com (obituaries.)

To The Skoog family
I worked for Chuck for many years as a young boy and then into my 20's when I got to drive the old Ford van. I first met him when I was about 12 years old and got to spend lots of time "doing" odd chores at the house like dusting 45's,stacking boxes and so forth. I will miss the visits with him when I had the chance to stop by and find him tinkering with some project. As someone who lived in Andover my whole life (40) until just seven short years ago, I was shocked to find out just yesterday 6/25 that Chuck had passed away. I just left a note on the his van on Sunday 6/24 trying to find where Chuck was, now that the house was for sale. My thoughts go out to all of you. I was completely caught off guard. I wish I had stopped out just a little earlier.

My deepest sympathies to the Skoog family. I went to Andover Elem. School with "Chucky," and enjoyed our times together very much. I remember a time we had a party at our house, and can just picture Chucky there lying on a trunk. And I have a picture (by the way, that is a GREAT picture of him - so much like him - always smiling) of him on our AES eight-grade trip to New York City in my "baby/life" book. My sister Lois (Gale) always keeps me informed of the happenings in Andover & Columbia. My prayers will be with you all.

Dear Pete, Elinor, Sarah and family: We are so sorry to hear of both your mom and then Chuck's passing, what a shock that was. My family and I wish all of you God's peace, love and strength for this time, and the days to come. Andover lake will just never be the same without Chuck and his music being there, but the many memories that he left behind will still bring warmth and smiles to all who knew him. Please know that you are thougt of often, and that all of our prayers are with you. Hey-now he gets to play for even more people "up there"--you can be sure that the angels will be dancing now! Watch out!!! With our love, Lora Lee (Orcutt), Sarah and Samantha Liappes and family......

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Chuck
Skoog. I met him only once when working as a per diem therapist at MHCC. We shared some good conversation, and I was immediately impressed by his good nature, delightful sense of humor, and incredible outlook on life. Chuck's acceptance of events that forever changed his life so many years ago, and the courage and grace with which he changed course and moved on, is inspirational. I feel blessed to have met him and am richer and humbled by the experience.

Astrid, Billy and Pete...
So many wonderful memories that we will never forget. The Red Barn Dances - hanging out at your house, never knowing what Chuck or your Mother would say (their sense of humor was unique and fun) kept my teen years bubbling. We will always have your family in our hearts. To Chuck and Mom Skoog, thanks for the memories!

Oh, my dear, sweet Astrid...
My heart just aches for you in the passing of your Mom and Chucky. I can't imagine what you are going through. I do know, however, the devastating sadness felt by those of us who were so blessed in ever having the opportunity of sharing time with your Mom or with Chucky. In knowing them, just as with yourself Astrid, one got to see and experience the true meaning of warmth, kindness, bravery, undaunted fortitude and perseverence and...ABSOLUTE side-wrenching humor!
I recall times when your Mom would give us rides to our Dance Classes in Coventry. We were young, energetic 10 yr olds, but by the time we'd get there, we'd all be zapped, drained of energy, our sides would be aching and we'd all be in desperate need of a nap. Oh how she could make us laugh! She was just wonderful!
And, oh...our Chucky! Look at those eyes (his mom's) and that awesome smile! Some of my BEST childhood memories stem from the days of the Red Barn Dances and...our AMAZING Chuck Skoog! His smile, his music and his friendship I'll hold close and cherish forever.
I remember the day of his accident and the 'hush' that swept over our little town. All that could be heard were whispers of prayers. But, the Skoogs found determination and strength that rendered us all "awestruck"! What an amazing family! Truly an inspiration!
I pray that you are able to maintain that determination and strength now, Astrid, in your extreme time of need. I send my deepest sympathy to you and yours, and a wish for peace, love and light to come fill your darkness.

Love, Sharon

Dear Astrid, Bob, Jamie and Jim, it is with great sorrow that we learned of your recent loss of Muriel and Chuck. Our hearts go out to you and your family. I will never forget how much fun it was to spend time with you at your mom's place on the lake and picking strawberries with your mom. Nor, how much fun those dances were with Chuck as the DJ.

Astrid, Bill, Peter and extended family,
I was very sorry to hear about Chuck's and Muriel's passing. Our families kind of grew up together at the Lake. I have fond memories of sailing with Chucky and building at least one very sophisticated dam on the brook nearby. How he and the family dealt with his accident was a lesson in hope and persistance.

Skoogs, My heartfelt condolences to you in the loss of your beloved. I remember how sweet he was to me when I was a teenager in the 70's and he used to let us hang out with him at his gigs and he let me view his cool precious record collections and always cracked me up with his quick wit as he joked around. He still makes me smile when I think of him at the Andover Lake house acting silly and leaving me with fond memories of good times past!

Pete, Elinor & Family,

So sorry to hear about the loss of Chuck. I had to smile at the mention of the "Red Barn" dances...they were memorable... There was a time when Chuck was the DJ for most parties we went to. He was able to overcome tragedy, with the love and support of his family, and lead a full and happy life. Our thoughts are with you.

This is my greatest tribute to a mother's ultimate devotion and her son's great fortitude and intellect in learning to keep himself alive and functional. I provided much of his medical care from the early 1960's until my retirement in 1996.

To Chuck's family: I read with great sadness this morning of Chuck's passing. My friendship with Chuck goes back to the 1970s, connected through our love of music and record collecting. In 1980, Chuck told me of some fellows in Willimantic who needed a deejay. They had the equipment, and I had the music, and it was an excellent match. I became the deejay for Crazy Rythem, and for years we did many bookings, developing quite a following. All because of Chuck's intervention. One thing about Chuck that I admired was his ability to overcome his handicap and create a livelihood, using his knowledge of music and electronics. In the '90s, I was greatly pleased as a photojournalist to do an article on Chuck, when he purchased two jukeboxes, and to see it featured on the front page of the Rivereast News Bulletin. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Astrid - my sympathies to you again on the loss of your brother. I know my brother, Doug Braman, would offer you the same condolence.

Linda Girshick Stein

March 29, 2007

Dear family of Chuck,
My name is Linda Girshick Stein and in 1953, I had the pleasure of "living" with Chuck in the Newington Home and Hospital. I entered the hospital as a frightened 16 year old away from home for the first time. When I met Chuck, Al Browning and Clair Potts, I found a group of friends who made life in the hospital if not normal-certainly fun! I remember laughing a lot. I think this was Chuck's idea-we were thinking of writing a book called Romance on a Bedpan!
When I saw Chuck's smiling face in his obituary this morning, all the memories came back. This past year, there was a reunion of people who were at the hospital in the 50's. I found out about it week's later and was so sorry that I missed seeing Chuck and the other teens who helped make my outlook on life the way it is today.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
