David Bordonaro Obituary

David Michael Bordonaro, 55 of Portland, beloved husband of Linda (Steele) Bordonaro, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at The Connecticut Hospice in Brandford, CT. David was born on January 6, 1960 in Middletown, CT., to Anne Marie (Lastrina) and the late Joseph Bordonaro Sr. Besides his loving wife of 30 years, he leaves behind his two adoring children, Jay Jim and Anna Grace Bordonaro. David also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Jennifer Bordonaro of Portland, brothers and sisters-in-law Robert Steele and wife Nance of Portland, CT., Deborah Soter and husband Philip of Colchester, CT., Barbara DeBarber and husband Chris of Woodbury, CT., John Steele and wife Denise of Portland, CT., and Betty Steele of Glastonbury, CT. He also leaves his father-in-law Robert Steele, Sr. of Portland, CT. and several amazing nieces, nephews and cousins that he loved deeply. Dave was predeased by his father Joseph Bordonaro Sr., and his mother-in-law Dorothy Steele. Dave attended Portland High School, graduating in 1978 and went on to graduate from the New England Technical Institute with his best and lifelong friend, Arne McLellan. At the young age of fifteen, Dave purchased a 1965 fastback mustang and spent the next 40 years rebuilding it and making many friends along the way. One of David's greatest privileges was having taught CCD at St. Mary Church for 21 years. It gave him immense pleasure to serve the Lord and touch and inspire many young lives by sharing his personal testimony.Dave was a leukemia survivor, having had a successful bone marrow transplant in 1993 using a donor from Milan, Italy. Thank you Pier Angelo Meroni for giving Dave the last 22 years of his life. Through baseball tournaments, benefit dinners and a small change bucket in the front of Bordonaro's Pharmacy, Dave raised enough money to pay for thousands to join the National Bone Marrow Registry. Several of the donors he signed up went on to match, donate and save the lives of others. Dave endured many tough trials in his life but would be the first to praise God for the many blessings those trials brought. He loved his family and was a dedicated husband and father. The pride of his life were his two children. Nothing made him happier than tossing a baseball with them, teaching them how to ice skate or casting a fishing line into Great Hill Lake. He also coached several Little League Baseball teams including the Marlins, Rockies, and Angels. Dave was an enthusiastic story-teller, and enjoyed many laughs around card and dining room tables. He had a strong work ethic passed down to him from his father and was gifted with the ability to fix just about anything and what he couldn't fix, he knew a friend who could. Dave cheered for the underdog and always searched for and usually found the good in people. He will be deeply missed by many but forgotten by none. The family would like to thank the compassionate and caring staff at Branford Hospice who went above and beyond to make a difficult time more bearable. Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27 at St. Mary's Church on 51 Freestone Ave., Portland. The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers those who wish may donate to the Bordonaro Children Education Fund at Liberty Bank or the Melonoma Research Foundation @ www.melonoma.org. Marie, Joe, Linda and family,
50 years ago now, the Bordonaro home was truly my favorite babysitting job. Not only for the special snacks that you left, Marie, but for the two beautiful, well behaved and fun loving little boys you had. David always sang church songs before he went to sleep. It is one of my fondest memories. Now he is in God's choir. I'm sorry I can't be with you today, but I hold you all close in my thoughts and prayers.

I will always remember cousin Dave as a really fun guy with an infectious smile. He was a fellow prankster at family picnics (we lit fireworks near Uncle Bart one time) and just a really great guy who was always very nice to me.
The fireworks from his house were epic this year.
On behalf of my grandmother Ruthie, his aunt, we offer our love and sincere condolence to his, our, family.
He is missed.

To Dave's entire family, Along with the Portland community my family shares in the loss of David....a truly remarkable person. His zest for life and contagious enthusiasm are now great memories for all who knew him. Not only was he a great listener, but he had the patience of a saint. Dave was understanding and forgiving and always sought the positive in people. Although he has departed from us his legacy remains. Not only in his own children, but in the hundreds of St. Mary's CCD students whose lives were enriched by his amazing journey. My daughter was one of the lucky ones who had Dave for two consecutive years. He truly took their breath away. For months we all prayed for a second miracle for David. Unfortunately it was not meant to be as God's next mission for him took precedence. Heaven has yet another angel guiding us. I can only imagine the reunion when Dave is reunited with Joe Sr. and Johnny Zamp!

Dear Marie:

We are currently in Ireland, commemorating the one hundredth anniversary Dad's birth here. And so, necessarily, from afar, I write to tell you how very sorry I am for yet another significant loss from your life. How I wish I were home and so could join you for the funeral on Monday. Instead, I assure you of my prayerful remembrance of both you and David at Mass on Sunday, in the church where Dad was baptized and where I was ordained Deacon in 1966. Know that I hold you dear and will be in touch once we return. Father Ed
