Delbert Cornell Obituary

Delbert "Del" N. Cornell, 68, of Newington, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 10, 2017 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Eileen Bloch. Born in Norwich, son of the late Levi B. Cornell, Jr. and Pauline L. (St. Martin) Cornell, he was a longtime Newington resident. Along with his parents he was predeceased by brother, Craig B. Cornell of Mansfield. He is survived by brothers Robert N. Cornell (Debra) of Coventry, Donn L. Cornell of Madison, Benjamin L. Cornell (Jane) of Hampton, and Willard S. Cornell (Lisa) of Mansfield, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. Del served his country honorably in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and then the Army Reserves. He was employed by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles for 28 years until his retirement as Division Chief. He will be dearly missed by his hot rod buddies, Tom Shirshac, Barry Graugard, Len Widener and Monty Provost, who came weekly to work with him on their projects. We are proud of the restoration he did of his Dad's original 1959 State Police cruiser that he subsequently donated to the Connecticut State Police Museum. His most enjoyable project was restoring a 1931 Model A Ford as a father/son project during the 1990's. A special thank you also to Jerry Longo, Tony Dellafiore and Chet Camellieri and the gang. His funeral will be held on Thursday, Feb. 16th, at 9:00 a.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Newington. He will be laid to rest with military honors in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial. To the Cornell family,
I will always remember him for his patient, kind and considerate leadership, a man who put the welfare of the staff under his command first.

From Guy and Diana Reynolds - Guy served with Del in the Motor Vehicle Department. I was a road-warrior with him in the Truck Inspection Program. He later became my boss and it was my privilege to serve beneath him. I went to Vietnam in 1965 when the 1st Air Cav went over, so, we had that 'Band of Brothers' thing going on also. Our prayers go out to all of the family and friends. Love to all, Guy and Diana

Dear Del,

From the time I watched you as a young man in military flight training, I knew you were meant to be a pilot and flying came so easy to you. You saved many young men in service to our Country and you did it with perfection and dedication. I was always proud of the man (Ghostrider 22) and always, I knew you were happiest of all up there in the skies. Now the sky is yours to soar and I hope you look down on all of us who loved you with your special smile. Faith is knowing we WILL be given WINGS to fly. You will forever be loved and missed. Pj

Ghostrider 22 is on his final flight, God's speed, fly to the light. Gates will open on arrival, many friends and family there to greet you. Enjoy your reunions. Selfishly I think your takeoff was way to soon. I Love you Del. Till we meet again, give Mom, Dad, & Craig a hug for us. Miss you already, Blueghost 35

it was a great honor to know Del. My life was enriched with him being part of it. There are few people in this world you get to meet with the Heart of Del. We will all miss you, but I know your flying high and dropping in low, cruising slow and listening to sweet country music.
