Edith Prague Obituary

Edith Gelt Prague passed away surrounded by love on the morning of December 16, 2021. Born in Methuen, Massachusetts, Edith was fortunate to live a life she loved, filled with family, friends, work and making a difference in this world. We were all so blessed to know her and to love her. When Edith's father died when she was a young girl, she worked alongside her mother and brother in the family grocery store and there, she also learned the value of helping those in need as her mother delivered baskets of food to people during the Depression – early lessons that stayed with her forever, stories she could recount so clearly. Edith was a teacher, a medical social worker, a Representative in the Connecticut House of Representatives (1982-1990), a State Senator from 1995-2013 (she loved this role so much and took tremendous pride in her work) and Connecticut Commissioner on Aging. She represented the people in her districts with tenacity and honesty and she listened to anyone who needed to be heard or needed help in life. She fought to protect the rights of people to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect and never gave up on a cause she believed in. Edith called herself "a social worker with power." Of all the awards Edith earned, the real rewards came from individuals who wrote, called or stopped her in public to thank her, to tell her how she had helped them in their lives. Family mattered most to Edith. The best mother and grandmother any child could dream of, Edith will forever a part of her children's souls: daughters Shelley Prague, Benay Smith and Joanne Prague Doyle (Tom Doyle) and grandchildren Nathan, Matthew, Sam, Josh, Chris, Brian, Katie, Tim and Michael. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank and daughter, Susan as well as her brother George with whom she shared a very special bond and her sister, Beatrice. What her children will remember is a mother's protective love and the lessons instilled in us to always, when we can, help others, to stand up and speak out and to live fully and honestly. Services to pay tribute to Edith will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at 11:00 at Temple B'nai Israel, 383 Jackson St., Willimantic, CT. Guests must be fully vaccinated and must please wear a mask. Seating is limited due to CDC Protocols. Burial will follow the service at Temple B'nai Israel Cemetery located at the junction of CT Route 31 and CT Route 32 in Mansfield, Connecticut. To continue her work to help those in need and those who serve, please honor Edith with a donation to Generations Family Health Center, 40 Mansfield Avenue, Willimantic, CT 06226 to the Attention of Allison Heneghan, The Center for Medicare Advocacy at 11 Ledgebrook Dr., Mansfield, CT 06250 or The Columbia Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. As one of Edith Prague's former constituents, I always knew that she would return my phone calls, but if I needed a quick word, I could call her at home around 6:30 AM as she returned from her 5:00 AM run and before she left for Hartford. She was always gracious and attentive. Longer conversations could wait until Saturdays, when she often held court at the local landfill or transfer station.

I just heard of your mom's passing. Please except my sincere condolences. Your mom was one of the very few people/ Senators that tried to help us stop privitazation of DDS group home in Columbia.
She took time to call me at my home and set up an appointment with the commissioner and many others. She was truly understanding and did all she could. I will always appreciate her compassion for the people I serve,as well as,the compassion she showed me personally.
May her legacy carry on in all of you.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Prague Family. Edith will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her. As a child, I wore shoes always purchased at Prague's Shoes in Willimantic. We marched down the aisle together to receive our Undergraduate Degrees from ECSU. She played golf with my Aunt Helen. Edith was there to help when my Aunt Helen needed help as the years passed. I was happy to work for Edith during election campaigns. She was never too busy to help anyone needing help. Her Legacy lives on. With sympathy,

Ediths friendship was precious to me. She lived s long and good life and I am thankful for the many blessings she left . I considered her not just a friend but a mentor and role model. I am so honored to have been able to tell her these things myself, so I know she knew how ai felt. I was Commissioner of Social Services when dhe was s legislator. When I was a legislator she was a supporter and source of strength and wisdom. I am in Hawaii or I would surely have been at her service today. I will honor her memory. My sincere condolence for your great loss. She will be long remembered and missed.

The worst thing about moving from Hebron, CT, to Manchester, CT was leaving Edith Prague's legislative district. She was a force of nature. Her door was always open to her constituents (and anyone else). No matter was too small or too big for her to tackle if a worthy cause was a brought to her attention. When she got behind something, she produced results. She is the template for how to be a good public servant and representative of the people.

"Mrs. Prague" was in my early years a neighbor and in later years a cherished next door neighbor. As a child she was my elementary school teacher; my first employer; and my gardening/botanical instructor. In High School and College she was my informal guidance councilor; my life skills instructor; my healthy lifestyles example; my career councilor; my business skills educator; my reason for becoming a Landscape Architect. In my later years she was a valued friend still guiding me through life as we would spend time together on my visits back to Columbia Lake. Eddie was in short my lifelong mentor. She was like a second mother to me often sending me back off to college with homemade holiday cookie treats and well wishes...always after one of our "sit down visits". Joanne, Benay, Shelley and Susan were all part of my experience growing up in Columbia and will always be cherished parts of my childhood memories. For more than 55 years Eddie was a integral part of my life and most of all she was one of my dearest friends. Eddie and the Prague family will always hold a special place in my heart. My heartfelt condolences go out to Joanne, Benay, Shelly and all her grandchildren of whom she always spoke so proudly on the loss their mother, grandmother and one of the worlds truly most generous and loving individuals.

We often hear the term "Thank You For Your Service" when someone is addressing a military veteran, and although the term is appropriate in many cases I´ve always felt that there were also millions of `Everyday Americans´ who were performing the duties and services to their communities that make them also worthy of that term. Mrs. Prague was one of those people. Her dedication and devotion to the people of Connecticut is legendary, monumental, and appreciated by so many.

As we celebrate her life and her work, we should thank the Creator for giving us such a wonderful person.

To the family, my condolences, my prayers, and my thanks for sharing her with us.

Growing up in Columbia and attending school with Benay and Joanne, I got to know Mrs. Prague as a mom. Later on, when I was teaching in Columbia, Edith helped to champion and support teachers during my tenure at the local elementary school. She was a true advocate and I was proud to know her as a woman and politician. God Bless Edith and her family.

Connecticut lost a powerful and compassionate voice for those who were often left behind. Senator Prague was a champion of many causes including promoting the rights of individuals with disabilities while serving in the General Assembly. Connecticut was fortunate to have Senator Prague as the passionate voice of reason behind legislation that was only designed to improve the lives of Connecticut's citizens. She will be missed.

May G-d bring comfort your family among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Edith was a force to be reckoned with! In the early 1980's when I was an organizer with CCAG I worked with Edith on various legislative issues. One of my favorite memories was going to her cubby at the temporary legislative offices and having a lunch meeting. She brought peanut butter sandwiches for us and 2 carton's of milk!

I met Edith when I was in sixth grade at the Noble School in Willimantic. My teacher had become ill and Edith replaced her for the last several months of the year. A room full of eleven year olds had a hard time keeping up with her then. Thirty years later, when I served my first of several stints as a volunteer field organizer on her state senate campaigns, things weren´t any different. She was an force to be reckoned with. Those of us on the campaign worked hard but she worked harder then any of us, showing us all what it meant to be committed. She was a teacher, a friend and an inspiration. I was lucky to have known her.
